Fans looking to purchase Sporting KC tickets can now do so from the club’s Facebook page.

Thanks to MLS’ partnership with secondary market ticket purveyor SeatGeek and some new integrations into SeatGeek’s partnership with Facebook, fans checking out the details of a particular match on Sporting KC’s Facebook page don’t have to go any further to buy Sporting KC tickets for that or any other single match.

According to Paul Sawers of VentureBeat, SeatGeek launched its API (Application Programming Interface, or what is more commonly referred to as a mobile app) in 2016, but unlike many of its ticket secondary market competitors, it didn’t push that product to the App Store or Google Play directly. Instead, it has taken a course reminiscent of a Kevin O’Leary deal on Shark Tank and licensed it to distributors, one of which is Facebook.

That move in turn allows businesses who utilize Facebook to use the new software to sell tickets directly on the platform, as long as the business has a partnership with SeatGeek or the platform on which the tickets are sold is controlled by SeatGeek. Sporting KC is a business, whose primary product is soccer matches, and already had a partnership with SeatGeek in place.

More from Sporting Kansas City

It’s a concept that it still in the testing phase, and Sporting KC has volunteered to be the lab rat. It’s just another way that Sporting KC is stepping out to lead progress in the sport entertainment industry.

Sporting KC executives and ownership were influential in the creation of FanThreeSixty, which helps other sport entertainment entities collect and utilize data to improve fan experiences and maximize efficiency. Among its clients are the U.S. Open (tennis, not golf) and Oklahoma State University.

As Sporting KC’s season ended in the knockout round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, interested parties won’t really see what the new method is capable of until the 2018 season draws closer. Until then, Kansas City fans can take pride in the fact that their MLS club is again leading the way in the business of sport.
