2017 NFL Draft Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Brendan Langley
By Ben Almquist
It would be smart for the Kansas City Chiefs to invest at cornerback. Brendan Langley from Lamar is a name a lot of analysts are getting excited about.
The Kansas City Chiefs need to be thinking long-term about the cornerback position. The Chiefs have only three players there that are signed beyond the 2017 season. John Dorsey should be looking for at least one corner in the NFL Draft. Brendan Langley of Lamar is a guy that a lot of people are starting to talk about.
There are some long-term concerns about the cornerback position in Kansas City. Marcus Peters and Steven Nelson are set as starters for the next couple of years. However, Terrance Mitchell is a free agent after this year, and there is no guarantee that last year wasn’t a fluke for him. The Chiefs need a strong investment at the position.
With the spread passing attacks of today’s NFL, teams need to be carrying three or four starting caliber corners on their roster. That is a shortfall for the Chiefs, and it stands to get worse next year. KC needs to make a move to secure things for the foreseeable future.

Grabbing a corneback, or two even, is a sound strategy and this is the year to do it. The 2017 NFL Draft has one of the best corner classes in recent memory. Teams should be able to find some absolute steals late in the draft. John Dorsey needs to be taking advantage of that.

It seems like every year there is a small school player who catches the eye of all the draft scouts. That might be Brendan Langley this year. The Georgia transfer has switched back and forth between receiver and corner, but feels the most comfortable on defense. His big play ability got him all conference honors this past season.
Brendan Langley is an explosive runner who makes up a lot of field in a hurry. Solid athlete with good leaping ability and the quickness to stick with receivers on underneath routes. Strong for a corner and understands how to use his hands. Excellent ball skills and route recognition. Uses his speed and length to bait quarterbacks into bad throws.
The negatives on Brendan Langley largely stem from his inexperience. His technique stands out because it is so inconsistent. Poor footwork allows him to be caught out of position. Can force himself out of coverage by taking bad leverage points. Doesn’t show enough aggression against the run.
Brendan Langley is a raw player at cornerback. He’s got a ton of potential, but there is a ways to go before he’s ready to play. He’ll need to spend at least a year focusing on getting his technique up to snuff. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they have an excellent coach for that in Al Harris. This is a move that could make a lot of sense on day three.
The Kansas City Chiefs need to be seriously looking for help in the secondary. John Dorsey doesn’t want to be caught in another situation where they are scrambling to find a quality starter. Addressing the need before it becomes a need is the best way to go here. I see the Chiefs taking a pair of corners in this draft.
