2017 NFL Draft Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Travin Dural
By Ben Almquist
Many analysts believe the Kansas City Chiefs will take a wide receiver early. If they decide to wait, Travin Dural of LSU could be a great late round value.
The Kansas City Chiefs need another playmaker on offense, especially in the passing game. The emergence of Tyreek Hill has been great, but the Chiefs need more. Travin Dural from LSU is a talented player that not a lot of people have been talking about. He could help provide a spark to the KC offense.
Since coming to Kansas City, John Dorsey has put a lot of effort into finding playmakers for the Chiefs offense. Not all of these moves have worked out, but some have. That is especially true of Tyreek Hill, who I think will be taking over the #2 receiver spot.
However, KC could certainly use some more talent in their passing attack. In today’s NFL, you want as many weapons as possible. If the Chiefs can get more dangerous with their third and fourth receivers, it will open up more opportunities for Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and other top weapons.

The depth chart at wide receiver has a talented group of young players. However, a good team is always pushing their roster to get better. This group especially needs to take a step forward. The best way to do that is to add competition to the mix. Don’t be surprised if the Chiefs do that in the middle rounds of the draft.

Many people expected Travin Dural to be the next great LSU receiver. However, the LSU offense couldn’t get anything together and Dural’s production suffered for it. The LSU coaches never figured out how to use the dynamic playmaker. The end result is that many analysts are overlooking a player with a lot of tools to work with.
Travin Dural is a natural runner who can win with his straight line speed or quick moves. Has decent size to line up inside or outside. Excellent runner with the ball in his hands, showing toughness to fall forward or power through arm tackles. Dural has the acceleration to generate separation out of his breaks.
On the negative side, Travin Dural does not play like a polished prospect. Route running is inconsistent, and he doesn’t show an understanding for body positioning. Has very small hands that could be an issue at the NFL level. The big red flag though is Dural’s lack of production.
In a lot of ways, Travin Dural is the exact kind of prospect that John Dorsey likes to target. He’ll be available on day three of the draft, and in that range you aren’t risking much. The Chiefs will like his ability to make something happen with the ball in his hands. Dural’s talents match up very well with the West Coast Offense.

The Kansas City Chiefs need to find some more playmakers for their offense, especially in their depth chart. The Chiefs have to make opposing defenses respect every aspect of the offense. Getting a solid depth receiver who is a threat to score would be a huge advantage for KC.
