It’s no secret that the KC Chiefs need a running back in the 2017 NFL Draft. This class is deep enough that the Chiefs could wait until the later rounds. If they decide to do that, Jamaal Williams might be a nice option.

With Jamaal Charles no longer a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, the team has a big decision to make this offseason. Spencer Ware got the majority of the starts at running back last season, but absolutely fell flat after he sustained a concussion midway through the year.

The Chiefs, in the early seasons of the Andy Reid era, were reliant on their defense and their running game. With the running game not doing much at all last year, Kansas City was forced to become more of a passing team, and we all know how that panned out.

With all of that said, it makes sense for the KC Chiefs to go after a running back (or two) in this year’s draft. One of the prospects that the team could nab in the later rounds is Jamaal Williams out of BYU.

Williams had a nice career with the Cougars, rushing for over 1,000 yards in two of his four seasons there. Last year he amassed 1,375 yards on the ground off of 234 carries and danced into the end zone 12 times. His BYU totals were 726 carries for 3,901 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Williams showed he can produce like a star running back, so will the Chiefs target him in the draft? NFL.com doesn’t seem to think Williams has the chops to be a starter any time soon.

"His NFL size and physical nature give him a shot to make the back-end of the running back depth chart, but his inability to create for himself with broken tackles and elusiveness puts a ceiling on his draft value."

If the Chiefs did grab Jamaal Williams, they’d likely be planning on sticking with Spencer Ware as the main starter in 2017. Ware wasn’t awful, but the Chiefs’ run game just disappeared near the end of the season and it hurt them mightily as a result.

There’s no question that the Kansas City Chiefs need to go after a running back in this draft and I’d argue that they should use their first round pick on one. It’s that big of a need in my eyes.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Is Jamaal Williams someone that the team should look to add through the 2017 NFL Draft?
