The 2017 NFL Draft is approaching and many KC Chiefs fans are hoping that the team will go after a quarterback early on. Could Davis Webb out of California be their next guy at the quarterback position?

It’s been a long time since the Kansas City Chiefs have started a quarterback that they themselves have drafted, but this could finally be the year that it happens. The Chiefs have ten total picks in this draft, so they could opt to trade for a higher pick, or they could wait a few rounds.

If they could with the latter option, Davis Webb from California might be who the KC Chiefs are eyeing.

Davis Webb spent all but one year at Texas Tech University, where he and current 2017 NFL Draft prospect Pat Mahomes both sat on the depth chart together. Webb ended up transferring due to wanting playing time and he got his wish at California.

Webb had a nice stand alone season with the Golden Bears, throwing for just shy of 4,300 yards with 37 touchdowns and 12 picks. He has great accuracy with his throws, but tends to not change his mind once he has decided who he’s initially going to throw to. That will lead to Pick-City in the pros.

If the Kansas City Chiefs decided Davis Webb was their guy, he’d need some fine tuning. There’d be no throwing him to the wolves right off the bat. He’d need to be the third-string quarterback in case something happened to Alex Smith, so that he wouldn’t be put in a bad situation right from the get-go.

I would like this pick, but only if Webb can get a year or two on the bench. If Smith is going to be the Chiefs quarterback for the next two years, then great. This could be a nice solution.

NFL.com (linked above) writes,

"System quarterback with more than 65 percent of his attempts coming inside of 10 yards. Webb has enough raw talent to be considered a developmental prospect, but his decision-making and accuracy issues beyond 10 yards is a big red flag that might be tough to overcome in the NFL."

Obviously some of that is scary to read, which is why Webb would need to be mentored for a few years. Hold the ten yards-Alex Smith jokes to yourself please.

Personally, I’d like to see the KC Chiefs draft someone higher up in the draft, and I don’t see Webb getting selected until the later rounds. He’s not going to be anyone’s answer at quarterback for several years, so whoever drafts him will need to know that and have to work with him at improving his game rather than just tossing him into the deep end right away.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Would you want to see the team go after Davis Webb in the 2017 NFL Draft?
