2017 NFL Draft KC Chiefs Scouting Report: Curtis Samuel
With the 2017 NFL Draft getting closer, should the KC Chiefs be looking to add a wide receiver with one of their early selections? If so, perhaps they’ll take a look at Curtis Samuel out of Ohio State.
Curtis Samuel is an interesting prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft. For one, he was actually considered to be more of a running back during his time at Ohio State, but is entering the draft as a wide receiver.
Samuel’s stats at Ohio State show just how versatile he was on their offense, rushing for 1,286 yards and 15 touchdowns on 172 carries and grabbing 107 passes for 1,249 yards and nine touchdowns.
NFL.com notes that Samuel will be a receiver in the pros due to his size. At 5’11” and just under 200 pounds, he’s closer to the build of an NFL receiver rather than a running back.

While Curtis Samuel has the capabilities of playing two different positions, the Chiefs already have that kind of player in Tyreek Hill (and if you want to BS a little… De’Anthony Thomas as well). Bringing in Samuel might not be the right move.

NFL.com notes that Samuel could be decent on special teams, predominantly as a kick returner, and he did spend time doing that with the Buckeyes. He never returned a kickoff for a touchdown, but he totaled 453 yards on his returns during his two seasons as the kickoff return man.
Samuel was one of the fastest guys at the Combine, and the Chiefs like speed. That could be reason enough for them to go after this kid in the draft.
After all, when looking at the Chiefs receiver corps, most people aren’t impressed. The two best weapons are Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, neither of which are labeled (at least not at first) as receivers. The Chiefs need to bring in a playmaker at the receiver position.
Ben Almquist has Curtis Samuel on his big board for the Chiefs. Ben put Samuel as a second round target for Kansas City, which could make sense, as the Chiefs tend to go after defensive players in round one.
It is worth noting, by the way, that the Kansas City Chiefs did interview with Samuel, according to Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star. Could that interview lead to Kansas City calling Samuel’s name come draft day?
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
What do you think of Curtis Samuel, Chiefs fans? Would you want to see the KC Chiefs draft him?
