The 2017 NFL Draft will almost certainly result in the KC Chiefs adding a running back. Could Alvin Kamara out of Tennessee be an option for the team that just released their all-time leader in rushing yards?

With the Combine underway in Indianapolis this weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs will have their eyes on all sorts of prospects that will be apart of this year’s draft.

As everyone is aware of by now, Jamaal Charles was released earlier this week, and that means that the KC Chiefs desperately need to add a running back through the draft.

Sure, they signed C.J. Spiller last week, but as I previously wrote, that signing really isn’t going to result in much. Spencer Ware showed he can’t be an every week starting running back and Charcandrick West did nothing in 2016.

The moral of the story is that the Chiefs need a running back and they need to invest in one fairly high in the draft. One of the highest-ranked prospects in the 2017 NFL Draft is Tennessee’s Alvin Kamara.

According to NFL.com, Kamara originally played for Alabama, but eventually left the team after being suspended for the team’s Sugar Bowl game in the 2013 season. After that, he spent time at Hutchinson Community College and then joined Tennessee for his sophomore and junior seasons.

During those two seasons with the Volunteers, Kamara rushed for a total of 1,294 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also had 683 receiving yards and made it into the end zone seven times on receiving touchdowns.

Kamara showed what he was made of during his two seasons at Tennessee, but with his prior injuries during his Alabama tenure, that could be an area of concern for the young back.

CBS Sports ranks Kamara as the fourth best running back prospect in this draft (as of March 2nd) and predicts he’ll go in the second round.

That could be a manageable pick for the Chiefs, as they could address the defense in the first round and then go and grab Kamara in round two if he’s still there when they’re on the clock.

At the end of the day, the Kansas City Chiefs need to add a running back in the 2017 NFL Draft and Alvin Kamara might be their best shot at one of the better prospects. If they want to nab a guy in the first round, their best chance will likely be for Christian McCaffrey, but even he might not still be on the board by pick 27.

Alvin Kamara is the definition of a boom or bust player. He’s shown he can provide that burst for a team, but can he keep his cool and stay healthy? We’ll just have to wait and see.

What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Is Alvin Kamara someone you’d like to see the Chiefs select in the draft?
