The 2017 NFL Draft could finally see the KC Chiefs going with a quarterback in the first round. Could DeShone Kizer out of Notre Dame be that guy? Will he fall to the 27th pick?

The Kansas City Chiefs have not selected a quarterback since the 1983 NFL Draft when they took Todd Blackledge with the seventh overall pick. If you’re not familiar with that story, go watch the 30 For 30 titled “From Elway to Marino” and it’ll remind you of all of the guys who were taken after Blackledge.

On second thought, don’t do that. It’ll only depress you.

Just trust me when I say that it’s been a long time since the Chiefs have gone with a signal caller in the first round of the draft. While all of Chiefs Kingdom wants to see that change in 2017, is this the year it’ll happen?

If it is, perhaps DeShone Kizer out of Notre Dame could be coming to Kansas City.

Kizer spent two years as the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish and threw for 5,805 yards, 47 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions during that time. He also did some damage on the ground, rushing for 997 yards  and 18 touchdowns.

While Notre Dame wasn’t all that competitive in 2016, it wasn’t Kizer’s fault by any means. The junior threw for 2,925 yards last season with 26 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. Yeah, I’d take those stats over 15 touchdowns to eight interceptions any day of the week.

Earlier this offseason, I had DeShone Kizer landing with the Kansas City Chiefs at 27th overall. If he’s there at pick 27 and no other quarterbacks are, he should be hearing his name called after “The Kansas City Chiefs select…” because IT’S TIME TO DRAFT A FREAKING QUARTERBACK.

More from KC Kingdom

According to Kizer’s draft profile on NFL.com, he has a big arm and can make all the throws. Roll your eyes at the draft cliches all you want, but you know you’re excited for this pick if it happens.

Hell, the Chiefs could draft Tim Tebow in the first round and I’d probably be excited. Spending a first-round pick on a quarterback is literally something that has not happened in my lifetime and I’m 26 years old. It’d be nice to see a quarterback finally come to Kansas City early on in the draft.

Something to keep an eye on with Kizer, however, is that he is only a two-year starter and probably could have used another year at Notre Dame to work on his craft. One scout on NFL.com was quoted saying,

"“I could tell you he should have gone back to school, but he also has some things you can work with. We need to find out how he will handle the board when our coaches put him through different reads. That’s going to be huge for him. He’s a bright kid, but I’m not sure he sees what he needs to see all time.”"

Kizer more than likely wouldn’t be thrown into the starting role, as Alex Smith is still here for at least one more year (I’m not buying this Romo talk, so don’t even bring that up). Smith could mentor Kizer in 2017 and then hand him the reigns in 2018.

While this is obviously wishful thinking, I’d love to have DeShone Kizer as a member of the KC Chiefs. Will they take a gamble on him in the 2017 NFL Draft?
