The KU basketball team hopes to iron out some issues when they face the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Friday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Kansas Jayhawks have won four outings in a row after losing to Indiana in the season opener.  Despite their impressive 4-1 record, the Jayhawks have not had an easy time in any of their wins.

UNC Asheville is 3-2, and they share two common opponents with Kansas. They lost to Georgia by 14; a team KU struggled to beat by 11 points earlier this week. The Bulldogs handled Siena, beating them by 12. The Jayhawks beat Siena by 21, although the game was closer than that most of the way.

The Jayhawks haven’t clicked on all cylinders yet this season but have found ways to win most of their games. Over the next four weeks, Kansas has seven games in which they can work toward ironing out the kinks before Big 12 Conference play begins.

Kansas Jayhawks Team Leaders

This KU basketball team is unlike any head coach Bill Self has put on the floor in his 13 plus seasons at Kansas. So far, the interior game has been non-existent.

More from KC Kingdom

Against Georgia, four KU post players logged just 45 total minutes, scored five measly points total, pulled down only eight combined rebounds, and committed 15 fouls.

That is unacceptable, and the Jayhawks will not be able to survive that lack of production over the course of the season.

Another area of concern has to be accuracy from long range. From behind the three-point line, Kansas is hitting just 30 percent of their attempts (30-100). No player is over 40 percent in the first five games.

Free-throw shooting has been an issue at times, too. The team is hitting 65 percent from the charity stripe but the three freshmen – Josh Jackson, Udoka Azubuike, and Mitch Lightfoot – are shooting a paltry 39 percent (13-39). Most of that failure falls on Jackson, who is just 11 of 23.

The guards have been fantastic so far, carrying this team much more than they should be. If they don’t start getting help from the frontline, though, those guards are going to start wearing down.

This KU basketball team has a log way to go before they are going to be where Bill Self wants them. Luckily, he has a month to whip his Kansas Jayhawks into the team that can win the Big 12 again, and maybe challenge for another national title.

Not all is lost – the Jayhawks are 4-1 – and there is time for this team to improve. Hopefully, they start against UNC Asheville.
