The KU basketball team gets a little respite from their long road trip as the Siena Saints come calling Friday night.

The Kansas Jayhawks split their big games in Hawaii and New York City, losing by four in overtime to Indiana but beating Duke by two on a last second shot by Frank Mason III.

Kansas did not perform poorly in either of these premium matchups, and they need to maintain that level of play even though the competition may not be as stellar.

Siena beat Cornell, 89-78, in their season opener but lost to George Washington by two.  In their win, Marquis Wright and Brett Bisping combined to scored 54 points!

Through two games, Frank Mason III is the leader of this team. He tops the team in points (25.5 per game) and assists (7.0) and is second in rebounding (5.0). Additionally, he his averaging just two turnovers a game.

Mason’s biggest issue early on, as with much of the team, is fouling. Mason is one of four starters with nine fouls in two games. As a team, the Jayhawks have wracked up a staggering 58 total fouls in two games.

Also of concern is the fact that all the guards but Josh Jackson are averaging at least 29.5 minutes per game. Jackson’s minutes have been held down to 22 per game by foul trouble.

The Kansas Jayhawks are also looking for some consistency from their three primary big men. Landen Lucus as not a factor against Duke and Carlton Bragg hasn’t got on track yet. Freshman Udoka Azubuike had a coming out game against Duke, pulling down 12 rebounds in the win.

Mitch Lightfoot is still developing, and Dwight Coleby is still recovering from surgery so the front line is a bit thin and Bill Self has played four guards at a time quite a bit thus far.

This KU basketball team is still trying to find itself, and they were tested early with a rough schedule. For the most part, Self has to be happy with the split against two quality teams and the Jayhawks now can settle down to work on their problem areas.

Kansas will just get better and better, but they need to avoid a big letdown against less talented opponents.

They may be weary from their long road trip, but they should win this game handily.
