The KU basketball team hopes to cut down on their turnovers against the Emporia State Hornets in their second exhibition game.

The Kansas Jayhawks committed an unsightly 24 turnovers in a sloppy  first exhibition against Washburn. Kansas cannot afford to repeat that performance Sunday against the Hornets or any other game, for that matter.

Emporia State will serve as the last warm-up before the Jayhawks travel to Hawaii to face the Indiana Hoosiers, then to New York City to take on the Duke Blue Devils.

The Jayhawks also struggled mightily from the charity stripe in their first outing, hitting on just 18 of their 34 attempts from the free throw line.

The Jayhawks seem destined to be a guard-oriented squad this season. Nothing in the first exhibition game seemed to disprove that theory. Frank Mason III played 32 minutes, scored a team-leading 21 points, dished out nine assists, had ten rebounds, and turned the ball over three times.

Devonte’ Graham played 28 minutes but surprisingly only took five shots (all three-pointers), hitting on two of them. Graham had three assists and only one turnover.

Maybe the biggest surprise of the night was reserve guard Lagerald Vick played 30 minutes, the second highest total for any of the Jayhawks. Vick dropped in nine points.

Freshman Josh Jackson struggled a bit in his first collegiate action. He scored 14 points in 20 minutes of action but hit just one of his five free throws. He committed five turnovers as well.

For fellow freshman Udoka Azubuike, his Allen Fieldhouse debut was a bit of a mixed bag. He played just eight minutes but committed five fouls and three turnovers. He offset that with five points and two blocks but only corralled one rebound.

Bill Self will surely use this second exhibition outing to give some of his more inexperienced players an opportunity to get more comfortable in a game situation.

KU basketball fans should not be too worried about the rough first outing. The Kansas Jayhawks are going to be good, even if they may not look like it early.

These games will help them be ready for when they take on Indiana and Duke in the next ten days.
