Kansas City Chiefs safety, Daniel Sorensen, gets an extended role in Training Camp this season. He’s filling in for the absent Eric Berry. Berry is dealing with a contract issue and hasn’t shown up for training camp yet.

Daniel Sorensen went to Brigham Young University. He accumulated his best stats during his senior year. He posted 69 tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception, 12 passes defended and one forced fumble in 13 games in 2013.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Sorensen as an undrafted free agent in 2014. The 26-year-old doesn’t have much experience in the NFL. He’s played in 25 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in the past two seasons but has yet to start a game.

The KC Chiefs might need to lean on Sorensen for a while until Eric Berry returns. Hopefully Berry’s contract situation doesn’t cause him to miss regular season games this season. That would be a huge blow to the Chiefs defense if he didn’t play.

The good news, Sorensen has shown promise in training camp. He’s getting the attention of Andy Reid, according to Kansas City Chiefs beat reporter, Terez A. Paylor on Twitter.

"Reid likes Sorensen’s smarts and physicality. “Until EB comes back,” he’s the guy back there."

Sorensen put a devastating hit on running back, Knile Davis, during camp on Sunday.

The bad news, he hit Davis too hard causing him a shoulder injury. I like that Sorensen practices just as hard as he plays a real game. It’s always a good sign that a guy is playing to the best of his abilities at every given opportunity.

The KC Chiefs are in need of safety depth. Without Eric Berry, the safety position is weaker. To make things worse, Kansas City lost free safety, Husain Abdullah, to retirement during the off-season.

Guys like Daniel Sorensen, Jamell Fleming, Stevie Brown and Ron Parker will have to step up. The Kansas City Chiefs and the fans have high hopes for the 2016 season. The Chiefs broke their playoff drought last season when Kansas City beat the Houston Texans in the Wild Card game in Houston, 30 to 0.

The Kansas City Chiefs played the New England Patriots on the road the following game. Kansas City didn’t have dominate pass rusher, Justin Houston and were without number one receiver, Jeremy Maclin for most of the game as well. Yet the Chiefs lost by a touchdown, 27 to 20.

If the Chiefs were healthy, Kansas City probably would have won the game. The Chiefs may have beat the Broncos and found themselves in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and Chiefs rival, Denver Broncos, took home the trophy instead.

Only time will tell if Berry plays in the beginning of the season or not. I believe he realizes how close the team is to greatness and he wants to be apart of that. I expect him to sign the one year franchise tag before the first game of the season.

If he doesn’t, it looks like Sorensen will get the call for his first NFL start come September. Look for him to play hard just like he has in practice to carve out a bigger role for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. The guy is hungry and hunger pushes players to their maximum potential. Hopefully the team will be just as hungry and end up making a longer run in the playoffs this season.
