The Kansas City Chiefs are typically linked with any wide receiver that is on the free agent market. They’re at the point now, however, where they don’t need to target every single free agent wide receiver.

Brian Hartline was released from the Cleveland Browns on Monday, and that began the ever-so-popular speculation of him heading to Kansas City.

It happens with every veteran wide receiver. A team cuts an experienced wide receiver, and KC Chiefs fans immediately begin to speculate whether or not the guy would be a good fit for the offense.

In the matter of Brian Hartline, however, the Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to target him in free agency. The former Dolphins and now former Browns wide receiver has seen some success in the NFL, but hasn’t been lighting up the stat boards in the past couple of seasons.

In one year with the Cleveland Browns, Hartline had 46 receptions for 523 yards and two touchdowns. When you consider that he was supposed to be one of their main starters and only had four starts, that should tell you something.

Hartline suffered from a broken collar bone during his lone season in Cleveland, which resulted in him only appearing in 12 games. He missed the final four games of the year due to needing surgery on his collar bone.

The former Ohio State Buckeye did have back-to-back 1,000 yard receiving seasons in 2012 and 2013 when he was a member of the Dolphins. Those seasons prompted KC Kingdom to ask if the Chiefs should target Hartline when he was a free agent last year.

While the KC Chiefs don’t have the best situation at their second wide receiver spot, it’s better to see what guys like Chris Conley and Albert Wilson can do over a guy who only started four games last season for the Browns and is coming off surgery on his collar bone.

Conley has the capabilities of being a true number two wide receiver, but his rookie campaign sorely disappointed Chiefs fans. Hopefully he can step it up in year two and prove that the team spent a third-round pick on him for good reason.

The other receivers on the depth chart are the likes of Rod Streater and Mike Williams, both of whom were brought in during free agency. There’s also rookie Demarcus Robinson, who probably won’t be anything more than a three or four receiver during his first year in the pros.

What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Would you be interested in Kansas City acquiring Brian Hartline or do you think it’s best to just roll with the current receivers on the roster?
