Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on what the Chiefs plan to do at the running back position in 2016. They have plenty of options.

The KC Chiefs have an embarrassment of riches at the running back position in 2016. It seems unlikely that they will keep all of Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, Charcandrick West, and Spencer Ware on the roster.

The Chiefs just extended both Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West with West getting three years and Ware earning three. It seems unlikely that those two would be on the move given their recent extensions.

That leaves Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis for the Chiefs to try and find alternatives for. While Jamaal Charles would free up the most cap money, Knile Davis is the one who’s reportedly being shopped.

There has been speculation that Knile Davis is the subject of trade talks and the Dolphins would appear to be one fit. They’ve been connected to multiple running backs this off-season and the Chiefs could be a potential partner.

Releasing or trading Jamaal Charles seems unlikely and would likely draw the ire of many Chiefs fans, but it may not be impossible.

Jamaal Charles is owed more than $5.3 million this season but none of the money is guaranteed. The Chiefs could part ways with Charles via trade or by releasing him and free up quite a bit of cap space. He’s currently the seventh highest cap hit on the roster.

While letting Jamaal Charles walk seems like a travesty to most, it does make at least some sense.

He’s not getting any younger and at only 29 years of age, he’s old for his position. The shelf life of NFL running backs isn’t very long and Jamaal Charles has been one of the league’s best.

The fact that he’s guaranteed to money this season could be enticing for the Chiefs as they have a proven and effective quarterback combination in West and Ware.

The Chiefs were 1-4 at the end of the game that saw Jamaal Charles go down with his second ACL injury and Ware and West helped the Chiefs finish the season on a ten win run. They also helped them secure their first playoff victory in over 20 years.

While letting Charles go seems to make some sense, it’s not likely that the Chiefs would part ways with that offensive weapon. They may try to ease him back in slowly and utilize West and Ware a lot in the early going.

What do you think KC Chiefs’ fans? Are the Chiefs going to part ways with any of their running backs? Is there any chance that Jamaal Charles doesn’t play for the Chiefs this season? Let me know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
