Kansas City Chiefs Keep Backfield Intact For 2016

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs are keeping their strong backfield from 2015 intact for the 2016 season, as they gave Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West extensions on Thursday.

Look out for the KC Chiefs’ backfield in 2016!

Many seemed to think that once Jamaal Charles was deemed out for the season with an ACL injury (his second in just five years), that the Chiefs’ season was over. They were 1-4 at that point, and things seemed grim for a team that had all of the potential in the world.

The Chiefs weren’t done though. With the help of Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West as the primary running backs, Kansas City climbed their way back to relevancy. First, they got back to .500, and then they finished the regular season with ten straight wins and a playoff berth. Not to mention, their first playoff win in over two decades.

It was pretty sensational what the Chiefs did last season. With Charles out and losing four (then five) straight games, it would have been easy for the team to say, “Oh well. There’s always next year” and give up. They did not though, and West and Ware went on to combine for 232 carries for 1,037 yards and 11 touchdowns.

What the team has with West and Ware is a dynamic duo. West is able to catch the ball, which is always nice to see from a receiver, and Ware is a powerful back, who can plow his way into the end zone.

Don’t forget Charles though! He’ll be fresh off his ACL injury in 2015 and will look towards getting 1,000 yards rushing for the sixth time in his career.

Now the question comes… What will happen with Knile Davis? It appears that the team is open to trading the former third round pick, as reported by Jason Cole.

More from KC Kingdom

It would not be surprising in the least bit if the Chiefs decided to trade Davis. A former third round pick out of Arkansas in 2013, Davis was decent his first two seasons, but dropped off immensely in 2015. He played in all 15 games, but did not make a single start. Not to mention, he finished the year with just 72 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Davis’ problem all throughout his career has been not holding onto the football, and he showed that once again, fumbling in the AFC Divisional playoff game against New England. The Chiefs were driving at that point, and Davis’ fumble was pretty much the nail in the coffin for Kansas City in that game.

While it’s a bummer that Davis’ time as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t pan out, it’s good to see that West and Ware will remain apart of Chiefs Kingdom. West is a former Abilene Christian running back who went undrafted in 2014, and Ware was a sixth-round draft choice by the Seahawks in 2013.
