KC Royals News: Will Danny Duffy Make Roster
By Scott Dillon
Today’s KC Royals news focuses on Royals’ pitcher Danny Duffy and the Royals’ impending decisions regarding the 25-man roster.
The KC Royals have made quite a few moves in the past few days to trim down the roster. This allows those players entrenched in position battles to get a few more reps and earn their spot on the roster.
There only figure to be a few spots up for grabs between the rotation and the bullpen. With Danny Duffy having struggled so far in Spring Training, should he be worried about cracking the opening day 25-man roster?
Danny Duffy has an ERA of 9.00 over six innings of work in Spring Training. He’s given up nine hits, three walks, and two hit batsmen while only striking out two batters. Those aren’t exactly encouraging numbers, but there may be nothing to worry about.

Danny Duffy carries a career ERA of 7.58 in Spring Training. That’s a number put up over the course of 59.1 innings of work. He’s given up 73 hits, 26 walks, and hit seven batters in that time frame and has a career Spring Training WHIP of 1.67.
While it would be nice to see Duffy be a little more effective during the Spring, it’s just something he’s never been good at. In an article by Jeffrey Flanagan for MLB.com, Duffy is quoted stating:
"“I’m extremely confident in my abilities. Would I love to have better results here or better location? Sure. But it never happens.”"
Spring Training just isn’t his forte. If he’s content with working out the kinks and doesn’t let the score of these meaningless games get to him, then who cares what it looks like as long as he’s improving.

Don’t take these Spring Training stats too seriously. They are, more or less, pretty worthless when it comes to making the final decisions on the roster.
The coaching staff and trainers are going to be looking at mechanics and delivery over the final box score. These players have taken a long time off, and it’s not surprising that it takes a little time to get back into a rhythm.

Unless something goes drastically wrong for Duffy, like an injury or a complete inability to make small improvements, he’s not going anywhere. After all, someone has to wear the bear costume around the clubhouse.
So what do you think KC Royals’ fans? Is Danny Duffy in trouble? Are his stats in Spring Training as meaningful as the final box score of the games? Let me know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
