KC Royals News: Position Battles and First Round of Cuts
KC Royals news is all about how position battles are heating up and about the first round of cuts that the Royals made on Monday.
Opening Night is less than three weeks away and that means that cuts are beginning to take place in spring training. The Kansas City Royals had their first round of cuts on Monday, and sent four guys to Omaha and four guys to Northwest Arkansas. They also sent nine guys to other minor league camps.
With these cuts, the position battles are starting to show themselves out a little more. Guys like Brett Eibner and Jose Martinez were both sent to Omaha, meaning they won’t be in the mix for the right field platoon spot.
Miguel Almonte and Kyle Zimmer were also sent to Omaha, meaning neither guy will start the 2016 season off in the rotation or in the bullpen. Some thought Zimmer might be a dark horse rotation candidate early on this season, and he still could potentially get promoted weeks into the season. He just needs to stay healthy.
There are now 46 players remaining in Surprise, and it has answered some questions a little more regarding position battles. More cuts are on the way, but for now, we have a more clear picture of what the roster will look like come Opening Night.

"A concern for Ned Yost and GM Dayton Moore would have to be the health of the young right hander, who has struggled to stay healthy in the past and has accrued injuries in many of the recent seasons, only pitching 64 innings in the minors last season (but holding a competent a 2.39 ERA)."
