Today’s KC Royals news is focused on what it might take to keep Eric Hosmer in Kansas City for life. It probably won’t be easy.

Eric Hosmer has had some big moments for the KC Royals in his career. When he’s not busy driving in runs, he’s a picking machine at first base.

While Eric Hosmer is going to e entrenched in Kansas City Royals’ lore for the rest of his life, there is some speculation as to whether or not he’ll retire a Royal. It seems like most would agree it’s unlikely.

Eric Hosmer has a winning record, a good personality, is a leader in the clubhouse, and plays a good brand of baseball as well. Players like Hosmer, even without the power, are very highly valued and he’ll be highly sought after.

Carl Triano at Beyond the Box score wrote about the likelihood of working out an extension with the perennial Gold Glover. In his article he writes:

"After combining all the aforementioned extensions into account, I would sign Eric Hosmer to an extension reaching 6 years for $110 million. The above extensions were taken into account through a number of factors. Hosmer came in on the younger end of the age spectrum, and a six year commitment is in line with recent, young fan favorites. This extension would allow Hosmer to be a free agent at the age of 33 and give him the possibility of signing one more sizable contract during his career."

"Gordon is going to get on base and he is going to play elite defense. That alone has value. We also know that Gordon is an excellent base runner, even though it’s not shown in the typical fashion with stolen bases. For his career, Gordon averages 3.8 base running runs above average per full season, despite not ever stealing a ton of bases."

The Royals are doing something right now that they haven’t done in years past. They’re spending money.

That may bode well for Eric Hosmer’s chances of getting a contract that can keep in in a Royals’ uniform. That being said, $72 million is still a long ways off from $110 million. Recent reports have indicated Hosmer seems willing to take a little less to play for a contender, but who knows what his definition of a little less will be.

What may be working against the Royals is who Hosmer is represented by. Scott Boras is well known for having his clients avoid extension talks to see what free agency has to offer. Even if Eric Hosmer doesn’t come into some serious power, unless he completely blows up he’s still going to be highly sought after.

His defensive prowess and clubhouse leadership are going to be two things that help him earn his big contract even without the home runs. If Eric Hosmer does decide to offer up a ‘hometown discount’, don’t expect it to be well under market value. It also shouldn’t be held against him if he does decide to leave when that time comes. Too often, a players contributions to a team are soured by a nasty departure. Eric Hosmer simply doesn’t deserve any disrespect if he leaves. At least, not yet.

So what do you think KC Royals’ fans? Will Eric Hosmer be ‘Forever Royal’? Will he get to test the free agent market following the 2017 season? Is he set for a breakout season? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
