Honorable Mention: 2015 ALCS Game Six: RBI Single

This play had a lot more to do with Lorenzo Cain’s legs than Eric Hosmer’s heroics, but even worst case scenario would have seen runners on first and third with no outs.

Yes, Eric Hosmer has been full of big plays for the Royals in his young career. It’s great that he’ll be in Royal blue for at least two more seasons.

While it’s hard to fathom the Royals shelling out the kind of money it would likely take to keep Eric Hosmer in Kansas City, things have changed for the Royals.

They’re no longer the same team that refuses, or can’t, pay their big name players. It helps when those big name players keep winning baseball games and driving revenue. As long as the Royals keep winning, there may be enough money to fill the pockets of Eric Hosmer and the rest of the Royals core.

When Eric Hosmer becomes a free agent following the 2017 season, he’s sure to be highly sought after. He hasn’t flashed a lot of power in his career, but he’s only 26 years old. If his power starts to manifest, his price could skyrocket.

It also helps that he’s a proven winner. Teams are learning quickly that just because you can flip a bat and stare down a pitcher, it should be obvious who this is in reference to, doesn’t mean you can be a leader. Eric Hosmer is a leader and a very clutch player.

Aside from winning, the Royals may have some extra funds heading their way in a few years. They’re currently in the middle of one of the worst television contracts in all of baseball. But if they’re ratings continue to go through the roof, they may be able to cash in after the 2019 season.

If the Royals can bank on a big TV contract, they may be able to offer the core, including Hosmer, some back-loaded deals that will pay them out after the television revenue starts pouring in. It may just be wishful thinking, but hey, there’s always a Go Fund Me account.
