KC Chiefs News: Free Agency Galore

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs news is all about free agency and who the Kansas City Chiefs were able to retain and who they lost during the first day of NFL free agency.

Wednesday was a crazy day for the Kansas City Chiefs. Somehow, someway, the Chiefs were able to re-sign Jaye Howard, Derrick Johnson, Frank Zombo, and they signed big time right tackle Mitchell Schwartz to a five-year deal.

The team did, however, see Jeff Allen, Tyvon Branch, and Chase Daniel depart for other teams. Allen signed with the Houston Texans, Branch with the Arizona Cardinals, and Daniel with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Sean Smith is still a free agent, but Kansas City is still said to be in the run for his services. It would be legitimately  if he returned to the KC Chiefs just due to the amount of money he’ll demand, but hey… John Dorsey has done a hell of a job this offseason.

*Update* – Sean Smith has signed a four-year deal with the Oakland Raiders for $40 million. Link below*

The Mitchell Schwartz signing came completely out of left field, but it’s going to be a huge difference maker for this team. Schwartz has spent time at left tackle and at right tackle, and will give the Chiefs a solid experienced veteran along their offensive line. That is something the team has been needing and now they have it.

Also, how about bringing back DJ? The guy is beloved here and it’d be weird seeing him don another team’s uniform in the future. Fortunately, that isn’t happening.

It sure was a crazy day for the KC Chiefs, and that’s before you get to the whole tampering situation. The Chiefs forfeited a third-round draft pick this year and a sixth rounder next year due to tampering with free agency policies last offseason.

All in all, most people will say that even something like that couldn’t bring Chiefs fans down. Bringing back Tamba Hali, Jaye Howard, and Derrick Johnson as well as signing a great tackle like Mitchell Schwartz is a huge accomplishment!

Props to you, John Dorsey. Props. It was an active opening for free agency for the Kansas City Chiefs, but the team was able to weather the storm of losing several key players.
