KC Chiefs News: Jaye Howard Probably Departing

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs news consists of Jaye Howard and how he likely won’t be returning to Kansas City this season.

Jaye Howard‘s likely departure isn’t out of anger or spite. He wouldn’t be leaving on bad terms. The simple fact of the matter is that at the end of the day, the NFL is a business. Not only do the Chiefs have to do what’s best for them in order to succeed, Howard has to keep an eye out on what’s in his best interest as well.

Adas Teicher, who covers the Chiefs for ESPN, published an article headlined : Jaye Howard Doesn’t Sound Optimistic About Returning To The Chiefs.

The headline pretty much summarizes why Howard might not be returning next season. As good as he is, the Chiefs can live without him. This year’s draft class of defensive tackles is thought to be pretty deep. The Chiefs could find an adequate replacement and could potentially do so in a later round.

Howard is quoted in Teicher’s article as saying:

"Kansas City became home for me and my family, me and my wife and my two boys. They embraced us. I love the fans there. I love the organization. The front office staff is great. I’m surrounded by great players. I would love to be there. But ultimately, at this point in my career, it’s about me and my family now."

While it’s good to know Howard cares about the organization, comments like that one don’t usually indicate an eagerness to take less money just so he can stay with the team.

2016 NFL Free Agency: Who Will Jaye Howard Sign With? [Nathaniel Reeves: FanSided]

"Defensive ends in the 3-4 have been receiving huge contracts in recent years, with six players making over $10 million annually. Howard won’t match that number, but he still should find himself among the top 10 paid players at the position when the offseason is over. A fair comparison could be the four-year, $36 million contract Derek Wolfe signed with the Denver Bronocos in January."

Football players don’t play forever, and Howard is likely to try and grab up as much money as he can to set up his family for life. Football is a dangerous sport and more and more players are choosing retirement early to avoid health problems down the road.

Not re-signing Jaye Howard would likely cause the Chiefs some pain initially, but in the long term it could be what’s best for the franchise. Allowing him to walk allows the Chiefs to seek out a a cheaper option on the defensive line while allowing them to use that money elsewhere. If it means keeping other key players at the expense of one position, it’s probably worth it.
