KC Chiefs: Could Chase Daniel Be Headed To Philadelphia

facebooktwitterreddit

Former KC Chiefs backup quarterback Chase Daniel is hitting the free agent market this offseason. Could Philadelphia be his next home?

Chase Daniel could be getting a new home soon, and it could be with his former offensive coordinator Doug Pederson. Pederson took the head coach job with the Philadelphia Eagles last month, and has gone on the record saying that he views his former backup quarterback as more than that. Could Daniel be the new starter for the Eagles?

It wouldn’t be surprising for the Eagles to sign Daniel, as he did play for Pederson for three years in Kansas City. Pederson knows what Daniel is capable of and also knows what he wants in his quarterback. If he says Daniel is suited for a starting role, that’s a good sign for the former Mizzou Tiger.

Realistically, the Eagles could draft a quarterback in the early rounds, and still bring Daniel in. Normally if a quarterback is drafted in the first round, they don’t sit the bench their rookie year. This would be a good insurance case though in case the rookie struggles in training camp and needs a few more weeks to learn the system before being thrown to the wolves.

Ryan Quigley of Inside the Iggles feels like Daniel is a good option for the Eagles, stating,

"Daniel, on the other hand, would be a far cheaper option and has spent three years working with Pederson. At 29 years old, Daniel has only started two games in his seven-year career. That doesn’t sound too inspiring on paper, but looking big picture, leaning on Daniel for a year or two offers some benefits to the Eagles."

Another option that the Eagles will probably consider is bringing back Sam Bradford. Dan Hanzus of NFL.com reported that Howie Roseman (the executive vice president of football operations for the Eagles) said it’s something they’d like to happen.

Bradford played for Philadelphia last season, starting 14 games and throwing for 3,725 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Bradford’s problem has always been staying healthy, and more than likely if he’s brought back, they’ll draft someone and not sign Daniel.

Going back to Chase, he played for the Chiefs from 2013-2015 and started two games. He had 409 yards passing and one touchdown in those two starts, and went 1-1 (really should have been 2-0).

While Daniel shined in those two games, those were the only games he started in each of those seasons. He never started during his time with the Saints, and very well could be the definition of a career backup. Plus, he’s going to turn 30 during the 2016 NFL season.

His age alone is the main reason why the Eagles would be smart to either go with Bradford for another year or two or bring in a quarterback via the draft, as it’s unlikely that Daniel is the answer. When I predicted five possible destinations for Chase Daniel, however, Philadelphia was first on my list due to his history with Doug Pederson.

Right now, it looks like Daniel is residing in Texas according to his Twitter, so maybe he still signs with the Texans or Cowboys, but for now… Philadelphia is looking like a good option to land former KC Chiefs backup quarterback Chase Daniel.
