Kansas City Chiefs Should Stay Away From Johnny Manziel

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs have apparently expressed interest in former Texas A&M and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Kansas City may be the next stop on Johnny Manziel’s carnival of fun. Recent reports from ESPN have stated that the Cowboys, Rams, and Chiefs have shown interest in the party boy quarterback. The reports have said that Manziel will be released from the Cleveland Browns in March.

While the Cowboys are probably the front runners in this sweepstakes (Manziel is from that area), KC Chiefs fans should be a little skeptical of this news. Why would the team need to pursue such a player? The only thing I can come up with is that Andy Reid has been known to give quarterbacks second chances.

For example, he brought in signal caller Michael Vick after he was released from prison for his participation in a illegal dog fighting ring. Manziel and Vick are two different situations.

Vick was a proven quarterback before his off field activities took him out of the game. Manziel has shown small sparks of what we saw from the former Heisman award winner from Texas A&M.

There are many reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs should stay away from Johnny Football, but one of the non-off the field reasons is that he’s not good at throwing the football. Chiefs fans saw that first hand, as he threw a couple of awful passes, one that went to absolutely nobody.

The one thing that Manziel can count on is his ability to run. The Chiefs were able to see it first hand, as the former Heisman Trophy winner torched the stout run-stopping defense of the Chiefs on 11 carries for 108 yards. He came as close as a play away from almost winning the game, if it was not for some poor time management by the Browns in the fourth quarter.

Why would Andy Reid take the chance?

One reason could be that Manziel could be a perfect fit is because of the west-coast offense that Kansas City runs, which thrives off easy short to medium dump-off passes and leans heavily on a running game.  If Manziel could be a backup to Alex Smith for a couple seasons, as well as getting his life in order, I believe that he could thrive in Kansas City.

Should Reid take the Chance?

No. There is no reason for Andy Reid and the KC Chiefs to buy in to this real life soap opera.

With Chase Daniel probably leaving in free agency, the Chiefs have second- year quarterback Aaron Murray, and third- year quarterback Tyler Bray. The time invested in these two could eventually pay off after Alex Smith eventually needs someone to take his place.

The question to ask is: Is Johnny blowing hot air, or is there at least a little truth to the Chiefs looking at him as a potential project? There may be a small bit of truth to the interest because of Manziel’s potential upside if he gets his life together, which is where the problem lies.

Can he get his life together and play at a high level soon enough that a team will take him seriously? He certainly can, but it won’t be in 2016, and it won’t be for the Kansas City Chiefs. At least I hope not.
