KC Chiefs News: Travis Kelce and Free Agency

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Chiefs news this morning is all about Travis Kelce signing a five-year contract extension, and about the guys on the team who might not be returning to Kansas City.

Travis Kelce had himself a pretty good week. He was in Hawaii this past week in preparation for the Pro Bowl, landed himself a dating show, and on Friday signed a five-year contract extension worth $46 million. He’s probably had worse weeks.

Kelce had one year remaining on his contract, but it was extremely wise for the KC Chiefs to lock him up while they could. Had Kelce decided to test the free agent market next season, the Chiefs might not have been able to keep the young tight end.

Now, he’ll go on to be the second highest paid tight end in the NFL. Not bad for a third round draft pick.

On the flip side of that, the Kansas City Chiefs have several guys who will not be returning to the team in 2016. Some of these guys are big name players like Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, and Sean Smith, but then there are other lesser known guys like Husain Abdullah and Chase Daniel.

It could be a rough offseason for the Chiefs, but the good news is that there have been rumors that they have been in talks with Jaye Howard. Bringing Howard back would be a huge help for a defense that flourished with him starting this past year.

The Chiefs won’t be able to bring back everyone, but they still have the franchise tag option for at least one player. Whether they use it on Berry or Smith, it’s a viable option to keep the guy in a Chiefs uniform for at least one more year while a deal is worked out.

Good for the Kansas City Chiefs for locking Travis Kelce up to a long-term deal. Good young tight ends are hard to come by in the NFL these days, and the Chiefs now guaranteed themselves one through the 2021 season.
