The MLB released it’s new spring training designs for both uniforms and hats today. The KC Royals’ hat includes a crown atop the KC giving players and now fans a chance to be ‘Crowned’.

Last year the Royals headed to spring training on a mission. Fangraphs.com had selected them to finish below .500 after they had just made an appearance in the World Series. The chip on their shoulder had helped them run away with the division and prove the projections wrong.

This year, the Royals will head to spring training again projected to finish under .500. Hopefully, that projection will spark yet another great season for the Royals as they look to disprove the projections and silence the naysayers. But this year, when the Royals arrive in Arizona they’ll be acknowledged with the ‘Crown’ they’ve earned. The small yellow crown that will sit above the ‘KC’ logo is not just decoration, it’s a symbol of the champions that they are. (A picture of the Royals’ hat can be found here.)

Aside from the crown on top, each hat will contain a logo indicating what league the team plays in on one side. The other side will hold a patch that indicates the state that the team resides in for spring training. To see more information on these details check out this article.

There will also be some jersey modifications that make the jerseys less heavy and restricting. See what Mark Newman of mlb.com had to say about the release:

"What they and all the other ballplayers suit up in will be a key topic of conversation at the start of Spring Training, too. Major League Baseball, along with Authentic Collection partners Majestic and New Era, unveiled a new on-field look Thursday that includes lighter-weight uniforms, many new cap designs, specially-marked balls and other on-field elements. The jerseys are a part of Majestic’s new Flex Base uniform system, a design developed through insights from Major League players, innovative fabric technologies and extensive wear testing over the past two years. The new Flex Base uniforms feature a new, lighter-weight twill technology and mesh panels on the sides of the jerseys that reduce the overall weight of jerseys by 10-20 percent and enhance freedom of movement, which is significant to players."

Personally I’m excited about the new hats.  Even though I have more MLB hats than anyone should probably own, it’s my anti-drug (Not Really). I will certainly be looking to add the new Royals’ spring training hat to my collection when they become available to the general public.

While the Royals may be walking into camp with a new look, they have the benefit of their core group returning. Crown or no crown atop the hat, the Royals will certainly be looking to repeat as World Champions.

They were described as relentless during last year’s playoff run, and I’m sure they’re hunger isn’t satiated just yet. As long as people keep doubting them, they’ll look to keep beating the world.
