What’s the verdict?

I think Christian Hackenberg has the tools of a top flight quarterback. You don’t have to squint very much to see a Ben Roethlisberger comparison. Typically, players with potential to be a top ten quarterback in the NFL go much higher in the draft than Hackenberg is expected to go.

I would probably put a late first to early second round grade on him. As it stands he’s expected to go somewhere between the late first round and middle rounds, according to Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. He seems like the type of guy that could impress at a Pro Day or combine.

At this point though, Hackenberg presents an opportunity for the Chiefs to draft an elite prospect at a key position.

Is he a fit for the Chiefs?

Typically tall, strong-armed quarterbacks aren’t what you imagine in a West-Coast style passing attack. However, Hackenberg’s rare mobility makes me think he could be a fit.

Andy Reid would have to tailor his scheme to meet Hackenberg’s strengths, but given his interest in draft prospects like Nick Foles and Tyler Bray in years past I think he would do so.

With Alex Smith at the helm, quarterback is not a pressing need. However, I think the Chiefs would be wise to snatch up Hackenberg if he’s available in the second or third round. And if he flies up draft boards and will only be available in the first? It’s a tough call, but the Chiefs should still consider buying.

John Dorsey has built a strong roster, and may be wise to follow the path Ted Thompson did in Green Bay. If he does the Chiefs might find their elite starting quarterback.
