Kansas City Chiefs: Can They Beat A Good Team

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs won their eighth straight game on Sunday, defeating the Baltimore Ravens 34-14.

The KC Chiefs have made their fans proud over the past month and a half. After a disastrous 1-5 start, the Chiefs have turned things around, won eight games in a row, and are sitting in the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs at the moment.

Yes, life is good for the Kansas City Chiefs and for their fans, but there’s one main concern lingering out there. Can these Chiefs defeat a team that’s actually good? They’ve played some decent teams, but starting quarterbacks might not have played in those games, or weren’t their usual selves.

Let’s take a look at the Chiefs’ opponents during the win streak:

More from Kansas City Chiefs

  • Pittsburgh Steelers (9-5) – The Steelers are a great team, but the Chiefs beat them when Landry Jones was starting. I think it’d be a much different result if these two teams met with Ben Roethlisberger under center.
  • Detroit Lions (4-9) – Not a good team.
  • Denver Broncos (10-4) – As fun of a win as this was, it was against an injured Peyton Manning. It was promising to see the Chiefs put 29 points up against a stout Denver defense though.
  • San Diego Chargers (4-10; Played them twice) – Not a good team.
  • Buffalo Bills (6-8) – This was a respectable win.
  • Oakland Raiders (6-8) – This was against a much improved Raiders squad, I’ll give the Chiefs that.
  • Baltimore Ravens (4-10) – Not a good team.

The wins against the Steelers and Broncos look impressive on paper, but Roethlisberger was out in that one, and Peyton Manning was on his downhill slope at that point.

  • The Bills and Raiders games were against decent teams, so I’ll give Kansas City credit there. They played a competitive Bills team with a lot to play for at the time (both teams were 5-5 and fighting for a Wildcard berth), and the Raiders were still in the hunt when the Chiefs traveled to Oakland as well.

Now before people get angry with me for even bringing this up, hear me out.

Remember the 2013 season when the Chiefs went 9-0? Well, they faced terrible teams to start the year, and then finished 2-5 against a tougher schedule. We all saw what happened to our Chiefs then when the playoffs came about. They blew a 28-point lead against the Colts, and it sucked.

The Colts were a good team that year, and beat good teams throughout the season. The Chiefs did not.

This year it’s sort of the opposite for Kansas City. They faced a tough schedule at the beginning and went 1-5 (although they really should have beaten the Bears) and are 8-0 since then. They lost badly to the Packers and to the Bengals in back to back weeks, and the offense couldn’t get anything done in those two games.

Even against the Bears and Vikings, the offense struggled. It just worries me that once this team plays tougher teams, the offense will shut down again and this team will have an early postseason exit.

The difference though, at least in my opinion, is that this year’s Chiefs team is better than that 2013 Chiefs team was. They have more talented players, and the Alex Smith, Andy Reid, and John Dorsey trio have been in town for three years now. They have more confidence in the system.

Each year under Andy Reid has gotten better in Kansas City, so hopefully they’re able to come away with a playoff win this year.

The Chiefs haven’t played a team with a winning record since week 10, but they’ve played with confidence the past few weeks. If they play one of the teams from the AFC South in the Wildcard round, they should be able to win, but you never know.

I guess as a life long Chiefs fan, I’m worried for the next few weeks. There’s always going to be that “They haven’t played anyone” argument floating around, and I just hope the Kansas City Chiefs can prove the naysayers wrong.
