KU Basketball: Where to Watch Jayhawks Vs Montana Grizzlies

The KU basketball team returns to the floor to face the Montana Grizzlies in Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Kansas Jayhawks, 8-1 and ranked number two in the country in the Associated Press poll, face yet another ho-hum opponent this Saturday. The Jayhawks, who had the country’s toughest schedule in each of the last two seasons, have filled their plate with delicious cupcakes this season.

Evidently, head coach Bill Self decided tough scheduling was not helping his team come NCAA Tournament time. In each of the last two seasons, Kansas was jettisoned from the tournament in the round of 32.

Kansas is just 29th in the CBS RPI, despite their record and top ten ranking. Kansas has played number one ranked Michigan, against whom they suffered their only loss, and beat UCLA, Vanderbilt, and Oregon State, yet their strength of schedule is ranked a lowly 82nd.

Self must be counting on Big 12 Conference play to boost the Jayhawks numbers, as well as an upcoming road game at San Diego State and a home game in late January against Kentucky. Meanwhile, fans grow bored.

Three Players to Watch for the Oregon State Beavers

  • Martin Breunig – 18.3 points per game, 8.8 rebounds, 61.5 percent field goal shooting
  • Walter Wright– 10.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.6 steals
  • Michael Oguine – 9.9 points, 5.1  rebounds, 2.4 assists

Three Players to Watch for the Kansas Jayhawks

  • Wayne Selden Jr. – 16.6 points per game, 3.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds, 57.5% field goal shooting, 60% three-point shooting
  • Frank Mason III – 14.1 points, 5.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds
  • Perry Ellis – 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds

The Jayhawks have to be worried about the inconsistent play of the multitude of big men. Perry Ellis has not looked his best, against sub-par competition, despite being second on the team in scoring. It isn’t clear if he is just struggling a little bit, or if he is suffering from an injury.

Self seems to be filling the other frontline spot with whoever is playing the best in any given game.

Against Oregon State, it was Hunter Mickelson and Carlton Bragg who saw the minutes. Landen Lucas, Jamari Traylor, and Cheick Diallo have all seen significant minutes from game to game, as well.

This KU basketball edition needs a couple of these big men to step forward and grasp the opportunity. None is standing out. Of this group, Jamari Traylor leads them in minutes per game (15.9), Diallo leads them in points per game (7.8 in just four games), and Lucas leads the in rebounding (5.6).

As a group, these five average 24.9 points and 19.4 rebounds per outing. Maybe this is good enough. Maybe the big man by committee will work. It will be interesting to see how these players fare against the Big 12, which has five teams in the top 20, and three in the top five.
