Royals Rumors: Should Royals Trade For Carlos Gonzalez

facebooktwitterreddit

Royals rumors seem to be aware the Royals need an outfielder with both Alex Rios and Alex Gordon likely not back in Kansas City for another season. Carlos Gonzalez may be their top option.

The Kansas City Royals are rumored to be interested in trading for one of the Colorado Rockies’ outfielders. Carlos Gonzalez is the best of the bunch and is one of the best outfielders in the entire league.

Should the Royals trade some of their top prospects for him? They need to replace Alex Rios and possibly Alex Gordon.

Gonzalez is a left-handed hitter that hit 40 home runs and drove in 97 runs with a .271/.325/.540 hitting line. He is a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner that has been with Colorado his entire career other than his rookie season, which he spent with the Oakland Athletics.

He is under contract for two more years and will make $17 million this year and $20 million for the 2017 season, according to Sportrac.com. That is a lot of money, and knowing the Royals, they wouldn’t want to spend that kind of money on just one player.

That would require the Rockies to take on some of the remaining contract, but to get them to do that, the Royals would have to offer more compensation in return.

Some of the prospects that the Rockies would obviously inquire about would be starting pitcher Miguel Almonte and shortstop Raul Mondesi Jr.

Almonte is a mid-90s throwing starting pitcher that is just about ready to make an impact at the major league level. The unfortunate truth about pitching prospects is that not many of them pan out and many of the ones that do don’t last long before they sustain some type of major injury (ex: Tommy John surgery).

It’s not a sure thing, but it seems to happen quite a lot.

Raul Mondesi Jr. is a shortstop that many thinks will eventually develop into a good enough player to take over for current starting shortstop Alcides Escobar. This fact could mean that Escobar is expendable, but Dayton Moore is unlikely to move him, as this team is obviously built to win right now and defend their World Series title.

In 366 career minor league games, Mondesi has hit .246/.293/.372 while crushing 24 home runs.

Not bad when you consider that he just turned 20-years-old in July, but not the overall production you expect to see with a prospect of his talent when it comes to his batting average and on-base percentage.

Pitcher Kyle Zimmer and outfielder Bubba Starling are a few other of the Kansas City Royals’ best prospects, and could also be in the conversation if Dayton Moore and co. decide to go after CarGo.
