KC Chiefs: Can They Finally Defeat Peyton Manning

facebooktwitterreddit

Week 10 of the NFL season is here and the KC Chiefs could see Peyton Manning for the final time in his career this Sunday afternoon.

Peyton Manning has constantly been a thorn in the Chiefs’ side, especially since joining the AFC West in 2012. Manning has absolutely owned the Kansas City Chiefs in his 18 year career, going 7-0 against them while in the AFC West and 14-1 against them overall.

The one loss Manning suffered to the Chiefs was back in the 2004 season. That particular game was on Halloween and ended up being a 45-35 Chiefs victory. Peyton may have lost that one, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. He threw five touchdown passes in the loss with only one interception.

So yeah, the last time the Chiefs beat Manning was 11 years ago. I was in eighth grade. Fast forward to now, and I’ve been a college graduate for two and a half years.

Peyton Manning didn’t lose a game to Kansas City all throughout my entire high school and college careers. He hasn’t lost to them since I’ve graduated from college either. That’s ridiculous, and you’d think it’d be a trend that’d have to buck eventually. I’m not so optimistic though.

This season was supposed to be different for the Chiefs. They weren’t supposed to be 3-5 headed into this second match-up against the Denver Broncos. They were supposed to be leading the division and headed to Denver with more to play for than just a measly shot at breaking .500 in the coming weeks.

No, the Chiefs were supposed to climb the mountain this year. By that I mean they were supposed to be competitive in the regular season (hopefully beating Denver at least once), win the division, and win a playoff game. That really didn’t seem like too much to ask, but hey… Chiefs fans are used to it by now.

Kansas City almost beat Peyton this year when Arrowhead Stadium played host to the first match-up between the Chiefs and the Broncos on Thursday Night Football in week two. The Chiefs had that game. They were so freaking close, but turnovers killed them.

The turnover that stung the most was the one Jamaal Charles had in the final minute of the game that allowed Denver to take their first lead of the night and ultimately give them the victory. That play turned the Chiefs’ entire season around. Yes, a play in week two changed a team’s mentality completely, and it has shown in the past few months of Chiefs football.

The KC Chiefs sit at 3-5 at the moment, but they really should be 5-3. They should have beat Manning and the Broncos and they should have beat the Bears in week five. Instead, the Chiefs have let stupid mistakes define their season and it’s annoying.

Hopefully with Aqib Talib suspended for this game and DeMarcus Ware out due to injury, Alex Smith can have success against the Denver defense. The Broncos’ D has looked elite up to this point, but last week looked human against the Indianapolis Colts.

This is likely the Kansas City Chiefs’ last shot at taking down Sheriff Peyton Manning. I just wish the game had more meaning to it than just giving the Broncos their second loss of the year. I wish this game knocked the Broncos out of any playoff hopes, but that won’t happen. The Broncos are 7-1 with the next closest contender in the AFC West being the Oakland Raiders at 4-4 (never thought I’d type that sentence).

This weekend’s game, despite no Talib or Ware for Denver, does not look good for KC. The Broncos just lost their first game of the season last week and are going to be fired up. Also, the Chiefs have won two games in a row. They’re due for a loss. You never know though, and that’s why they play the games.

At this point, the biggest thing that will come from a victory on Sunday will be pride.
