KC Chiefs: Should Chiefs Consider Signing Ryan Mallett
KC Chiefs fans are quick to complain about current starting quarterback Alex Smith. Should the team consider adding another option?
Ryan Mallett was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday. The Chiefs faced Mallett during the first week of the season after Brian Hoyer struggled to get anything done against Kansas City’s defense. Mallett looked okay, but a lot of it was garbage time yardage, as the Chiefs jumped ahead early on in the game (miss those days).
Mallett, a former third round pick out of Arkansas in 2011, was released by the Texans due to missing team meetings on Saturday and later missing the team’s flight to Miami for their game against the Dolphins. It was a rough weekend for Mallett, but the Texans weren’t having any of it, and released the former Razorback on Tuesday morning.
With all of this said, should the Kansas City Chiefs give Ryan Mallett a look? I get that he hasn’t done a lot to merit an opportunity with another team this season, but he has shown flashes of potential at the quarterback position during his stint in the NFL.

Right now the Kansas City Chiefs have four quarterbacks on their roster. Obviously Alex Smith is the starter (much to a lot of fans’ dismay), Chase Daniel is the backup, and then there’s Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray as well.
I’m not suggesting that the team sign Mallett to use as a starter, but more as a backup for the future.
Smith will be with the team next year whether people want him to be or not. I doubt Chase Daniel will be with the team after this year and we haven’t seen anything out of Aaron Murray yet to promote him to backup next year.
Mallett was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots where he spent time backing up Tom Brady for three seasons. Mallett was originally thought to be a first round pick in the draft, but rumors linking him to drug use cost him to plummet to the third round.

Mallett was traded to the Texans last season and eventually took over as the starter for Ryan Fitzpatrick. His season was done after two starts though due to a torn pectoral muscle that landed him on injured reserve.
Now Mallett is without an NFL team and could potentially be an option for the KC Chiefs to look at. The biggest worry concerning Ryan Mallett is his character issues. The kid doesn’t have a clean slate and sounds like he was released from Houston for a good reason.
For what it’s worth, Mallett claims he was late to the meeting due to traffic (as per the ESPN article linked in the second paragraph).
Andy Reid is a good coach for these type of players though, and maybe he could right the ship with Mallett.
Would you want the Kansas City Chiefs to sign Ryan Mallett?
