Jayhawks Basketball: Can Kansas Win It All In 2015-2016

With Late Night In The Phog just a few weeks away, it is time for Jayhawks basketball fans to start thinking about their beloved college team.

This season features a number of new players like Cheick Diallo, Lagerald Vick and Dwight Coleby. While Coleby has to sit out a season due to transferring, the other two key additions will be impactful from the start.

We saw Vick make big plays this past summer and we have heard Coach Bill Self rave about Cheick Diallo. In a quote from cbssports.com, Self said that Diallo “can create pace better than any point guard we’ve ever had here. Just because the dude from rim to rim is as good as I’ve ever seen.”

Wow. That is some high praise from a Hall of Fame caliber coach. Think about all the dominant players Coach Self has had. The fact he praises Diallo that highly means he is something special.

KU isn’t just a young talented team like they have been for the past couple of years also. They have seniors Perry Ellis, Hunter Mickelson and Jamari Traylor, to go along with juniors Frank Mason III, Wayne Selden, Brannen Greene and Landen Lucas.

Also don’t forget that they have redshirt junior, Tyler Self, and senior, Evan Manning. Those two may not play much in games, but they show leadership everyday by how hard they practice.

I really loved what I saw from Wayne Selden during the World University Games. He finally showed the talent and potential on a consistent basis that KU needed. Without him, KU would not have been crowned as the world champions. If he can play like that this season, watch out. This team will be dangerous.

Don’t count KU out this year. I know they have disappointed in March the past few seasons, but those teams were different. This year’s team should be great defensively and well-balanced offensively. They have the necessary leadership at every position.

Frank Mason III is the most talented point guard KU has had since Sherron Collins in my opinion. He is aggressive, talented, fast and athletic. He has grown into the leader that KU had been looking for. He was another player who was outstanding in South Korea this past summer.

Unlike last season, this Jayhawks basketball squad is balanced. They have some post play to go along with the great three-point shooting from Brannen Greene and Vick. Perry Ellis is about as good as anyone in the country, Jamari Traylor plays hard and is athletic, Diallo can move and set the pace and Mickelson can block shots and has shown an improvement in his post game.

Not only is this team talented, they are deep. KU has a very talented point guard in Devonte’ Grahmn coming off the bench. He could start for just about anyone in the country.

The Jayhawks also have Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, who is a very talented shooter. Svi, as he is commonly called, is very young so it will be great to see how much he has grown from last season. When he had a chance last year, he made it count. He was a very reliable scorer coming off of the bench and he should only be better.

I could go on and on about how deep KU is. It is incredible.

Don’t count KU out this year. I know they have disappointed in March the past few seasons, but those teams were different. This year’s team should be great defensively and well-balanced offensively. They have the necessary leadership at every position.

You’ve got to feel like Bill Self has something up his sleeve and he is about due for another National Championship.
