KC Royals: Will Alex Gordon Be A Royal For Life

facebooktwitterreddit

As the KC Royals continue to play on through 2015, one of the lingering questions as the season continues is what the future of Alex Gordon will be with the organization.

Alex Gordon is a fan favorite in Kansas City. Sure, I’m biased because I love both the Kansas City Royals and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but I do think I speak for most people when I say that Gordon is one of, if not THE, most popular players for the Royals.

A problem is on the horizon though, and that’s the free agency period, which likely will begin for Gordo after this season comes to an end. It’s been rumored that Gordon will likely turn down his $12.5 million player option for 2016, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good-bye Gordo for the KC Royals.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported on Friday morning that the Kansas City Royals are determined to make Alex Gordon a Royal for life.

"They’ve set their attendance record in the baseball-crazy town (though their TV deal is a bad one), and they are serious about trying to make him the first Royal since George Brett to be a career Royal. If he uses Shin-Soo Choo as a comp ($130 million, seven years), that would be very tough for the small-market team. They aren’t going to give up easily on this one, though, and their hope is based on his Midwestern roots and willingness to take a reasonable deal last time around. Gordon is from Nebraska and is a University of Nebraska product."

Now obviously if Gordon tries to get a Shin-Soo Choo type of deal, things might not work out too well, considering the Royals are a small market team (like Heyman said). Gordon is well liked in Kansas City though and he grew up a Royals fans. I know this sounds a little cheesy in the sports world, but he’s a good guy who seems to really enjoy playing for the Royals.

Sure, baseball is a business. All sports are a business. I just don’t see Alex Gordon turning down a deal from the Kansas City Royals should they offer him something hefty. Gordon will likely get a big contract, as it was reported several months back (before he was injured obviously) that he could merit a contract up to $100 million per MLB Trade Rumors.

With Gordon getting injured early last month, it’ll be interesting to see if anything changes with his free agency stance. Heyman noted in his article that the Royals are aiming to have Gordo return around the first of September, which is only a few more weeks away.

All of this makes it even more important for the KC Royals to win the World Series in November. If the Royals win the World Series, I imagine it’d be difficult for Gordon not to return to Kansas City for the remainder of his career.
