Kansas Jayhawks Will Host Kentucky Wildcats

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas Jayhawks play the Kentucky Wildcats as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge next season.

Allen Fieldhouse will be rocking when the Kansas Jayhawks host the Kentucky Wildcats in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on January 30, 2016.

Twitter is all aflutter with the news. In fact, it darn near exploded in Lawrence!

The Jayhawks have played the Kentucky Wildcats in recent seasons as part of the Champions Classic, which have been played on neutral courts. They also played in the 2012 National Championship game.

Kentucky handed Kansas their worst defeat under Bill Self last season with a 72-40 trouncing last season during the Champions Classic. Kansas lost to them in the 2011 Champions Classic, 75-65, and again later that season 67-59 for the National Championship.

Kentucky, which is the only school ahead of Kansas on the all-time wins list, has dominated the Jayhawks in their head-to-head history, beating them 22 times with just six losses.

They last time Kansas beat Kentucky was in 2007, when the Jayhawks won 88-76 in the NCAA Tournament. The last time the Wildcats visited Allen Fieldhouse was in 2006, and Kansas beat them 73-46.

Kansas’s greatest victory over Kentucky came in 1989 when the Jayhawks set a school scoring record when they beat the Wildcats, 150-95. (Scores, dates, etc. provided by bigbluehistory.net).

Kentucky leads Kansas by 21 wins on the all-time list. The Wildcats have 2,149 wins, and Kansas has 2,128. (Editor’s note – The NCAA has not updated their records to include last season, but these numbers compiled by adding this season’s victories to the totals in the NCAA records.)

Of course, this also means the Jayhawks will have to pay a return visit to Kentucky in 2016-2017.

This timing of this game is different than in the past for the Big 12/SEC Challenge as it falls right in the middle of conference play. Of course, the Jayhawks will be going for their twelfth straight Big 12 Conference regular season title.

The Kansas Jayhawks are in another battle with Kentucky presently, as both schools are vying for the services of guard LaGerald Vick. Hopefully, Vick will be in uniform for that game – for the Jayhawks, and not the Wildcats.

Kansas Jayhawks basketball fans live for huge match-ups like this, especially in Allen Fieldhouse. The Phog is going to be the center of the college basketball universe that night. It should be a great match-up, and a heck of a lot of fun.
