Kansas Jayhawks Recruiting Rumors: LaGerald Vick Contacted By Jayhawks

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas Jayhawks recruiting season isn’t over quite yet. Guard LaGerald Vick may be a target for the Jayhawks.

The Kansas Jayhawks recruiting storm hasn’t blown itself out as yet. Guard LaGerald Vick has appeared on the radar of Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks.

Jaylen Brown jilted Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, and others with his announcement last week that he was attending Cal, according to Scott Phillips of NBC Sports. The Jayhawks, who probably weren’t even the second choice for Brown, are still left with a hole at guard.

Enter LaGerald Vick.

Vick, 6’5″, 180 pounds was originally classified as being in the class of 2015, and had committed to SMU. According to Jerry Meyer of 247 Sports, while Vick is now considered part of the 2016 class, he can can go back and get classified for 2015.

Why would he do that? Well, he could have decided to attend prep school and work on his game, but now, with opportunities becoming available, Vick has drawn the attention of some pretty big schools.

According to Meyer, Kansas, Kentucky, and Louisville are now showing interest. The Kansas State Wildcats have also contacted LaGerald Vick. When the big boys come calling, you have to pay attention.

Kansas is looking for a replacement for Kelly Oubre, who made himself eligible for the 2015 NBA Draft. Returning players like Brannen Greene and Devonte’ Graham could fill the spot, but the Jayhawks still lack depth at the guard position.

The defection of Conner Frankamp to the Wichita State Shockers last December may end up hurting Kansas more in the future than it did this past season.

Bill Self has added two more big men to the roster. Carlton Bragg and Cheick Diallo are now Jayhawks. While this is great for the interior depth, it isn’t helping much in the back court. Self is going to need to add another guard.

LaGerald Vick is ranked 97th in the country by 247 Sports. Future150.com offered these scouting notes:

"LeGerald has emerged as one of the most polished shooting guards in the country for the 2015 class. He is an explosive athlete who can get to the rim, but what sets him apart is his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter."

They also mention he is a slasher, and has a good mid-range jumper, but needs to work on his ball handling and strength. This looks like a player Bill Self could develop into a nice player going forward, if he can reel him in.

The cupboard isn’t bare for Bill Self at the guard position, just a little thin. Kansas Jayhawks recruiting rumors will continue to swirl until Self can find another guard.

Don’t worry. Surely Self will be able to find someone worthy of bringing on board.

Remember both Frank Mason and Devonte’ Graham were late recruiting additions that were a bit under the radar, and it looks like both are going to work out fine.

Trust Self to find someone who will be a good fit. In the long run, finding someone who will be a good contributor for multiple years might be better than someone with a one-and-done mentality.
