The KC Chiefs were very unpredictable heading into the draft, and nobody could narrow the first selection down to a single position nevermind a single player. They were mocked to draft a wide receiver, defensive lineman, offensive lineman, cornerback, inside linebacker, or running back in the first round.
The one thing everyone seemed to be able to agree on was that they would draft the best player available and Marcus Peters is that player.
"Desired height and frame for the position with above average arm length…flexible hips and coordinated footwork to transition out of his pedal and collect himself on the move…excellent spatial awareness and feel for coverage to float, read and react, using the sideline to his advantage…tracks the ball well with above average ballskills – routinely gets his head turned, gains body position and uses his hands to make plays.-Courtesy of Rob Rang of CBS Sports"
Peters was a three year starter at Washington and managed 95 tackles, 34 assists, one sack, and eleven forced fumbles in his college career.
Peters is a 6 foot tall corner that will need to bulk and add strength to be able to handle the big NFL wide receivers. He will need to be a student of the game and allow the KC Chiefs to coach him up but the potential is certainly there.
Peters will benefit from having Pro Bowl snub Sean Smith on the field with him. It is no surprise the Chiefs took a cornerback after Marcus Cooper and Philip Gaines were unable to impress at the second cornerback spot in 2014. Hopefuly Smith and Peters can be as effective as Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr were.
Peters was suspended one game by Washington in 2014 for a sideline tantrum and was later dismissed by the team. The Chiefs heavily investigated the issues and apparently came away happy enough to draft him in the first round.
The KC Chiefs next scheduled selection is the 17th pick (49th overall) in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The second and third round of the draft begin on Friday, May 1st at 6PM CDT on ESPN, and NFL Network. The Chiefs also hold two picks in the third round including the 16th (80th overall), and the 34th (98th overall).
