Should Dwayne Bowe Be In The KC Chiefs Hall Of Fame

The KC Chiefs released wide receiver Dwayne Bowe on Thursday after an eight year career in Kansas City from 2007-2014.

The former LSU wide receiver, Bowe was one of the highest rated receivers in the draft, and was drafted 23rd overall in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the KC Chiefs.

Bowe finished his career with the Chiefs with 532 receptions, 7,155 yards, and 44 touchdowns. He is second to only tight end Tony Gonzalez in total receptions, behind Otis Taylor and Gonzalez in receiving yards, and trails Gonzalez, Taylor, Chris Burford, and Stephone Paige in receiving touchdowns.

He will always be remembered most for a magical 2010 season that cemented his place as one of the best wide receivers in KC Chiefs history. In 2010 he had 72 receptions, 1,162 yards (career high), and 15 touchdowns (career high).

Bowe was able to accomplish all of that despite never having a true elite quarterback throwing to him. He caught passes from Alex Smith, Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Palko, Kyle Orton, and Tyler Thigpen. There were more quarterbacks that Chiefs fans would rather forget, but those are some of the most notable.

Nobody ever heard Bowe complain about his quarterbacks, or complain that he wasn’t getting targeted, or complain when he was asked to block in the run game. In fact, run blocking was one of Bowe’s strongest attributes. Bowe should forever be remembered as a great team player.

That is not to say that he was a perfect person off of the football field. In 2009 he was suspended four games after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy after he tested positive for diuretic. In 2014 Bowe was suspended one game by the NFL after his arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

The question is did Bowe do enough to be a great player that deserves to be named to the prestigious KC Chiefs hall of fame or was Bowe simply a good player that had a decent career in Kansas City?

Does Bowe deserve his name beside guys like Will Shields, Hank Stram, Derrick Thomas, Lamar Hunt, Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, and Bobby Bell? The answer is probably not.

Bowe is only 30 years-old and still has a good portion of his career ahead of him. The peak of his career may be over with, but he can still be a productive receiver in the league. There is still a chance that Bowe could come back to the Chiefs to finish his career. Maybe in a couple years the KC Chiefs will be a good veteran wide receiver shy of making a Super Bowl run.
