KC Chiefs: Free Agency Frenzy Throughout NFL

facebooktwitterreddit

While the KC Chiefs had their big free agency move on Sunday evening by acquiring Jeremy Maclin from the Philadelphia Eagles, the rest of the league went crazy when the 3:00 deadline hit on Tuesday afternoon.

Right off the bat, three different trades happened. New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was sent to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for center Max Unger and a first round draft pick. The Seahawks received the Saints’ fourth round pick, according to ESPN.com. Most of you probably know this about me by now, but I am both a Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints fan and this trade angered me.

I get that Graham was expensive, but he’s the face of the Saints franchise (well next to Drew Brees, of course, who also evidently could be traded, according to Sander Philipse of Bucs Nation). Not only that, but he’s the best offensive weapon the Saints have. I haven’t yelled at my iPhone in a long time, but boy did it get a mouthful when I saw this trade announcement on Twitter.

Another big trade from Tuesday was when the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams swapped quarterbacks. The Eagles sent Nick Foles to St. Louis, and the Rams sent Sam Bradford to Philly.

"In addition to Foles, the Rams will also get Philadelphia’s fourth-round pick in 2015 and second-round pick in 2016. The Eagles will get St. Louis’ fifth-round pick in 2015 in addition to Bradford. The Eagles can also pick up a conditional pick in 2016 based on how many snaps Bradford takes.– Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com"

All in all, I think this is a fair trade. When Bradford is healthy (which is rarely), he’s a good quarterback. He was taken first overall in 2010, but injuries have decimated his career up to this point.

  • Foles is an average quarterback, but St. Louis will be a good fit for him I think. They have a solid defense there, and Foles will have the likes of Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt, Jared Cook, and Brian Quick to throw to. Also, Tre Mason proved to be a great running back for the Rams in 2014.

The problem with the St. Louis Rams lately is that their division is one of the toughest in the NFL. Sure, the San Francisco 49ers probably won’t be too great this season, but the Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals will be huge forces to be reckoned with. In fact, both of those teams made it into the playoffs in 2014.

Foles will give the Rams a chance to compete for the NFC West title and possibly make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

The other trade that occurred was when the Baltimore Ravens sent Haloti Ngata to the Detroit Lions for their fourth and fifth round picks, according to ESPN.com. This trade made sense for Detroit, as both Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley will likely take their talents elsewhere.

Those trades aside, there were a lot of retirements announced as well. Patrick Willis of the 49ers announced he’d be retiring at the age of 29, playing all eight of his pro seasons in San Francisco. Willis was elected to seven Pro Bowls during his eight year career.

One of the more surprising retirements came out of Tennessee though, as 26 year old Jake Locker announced he was done with football. Locker was drafted eighth overall in 2011 and never lived up to his top 10 draft selection, but the main problem with him was that injuries kept getting in the way of Locker progressing.

Jason Worilds of the Pittsburgh Steelers also announced his retirement plans. Worilds is only 27, and these young retirements is a little concerning honestly.

Tying things back to the KC Chiefs, though, the team signed former Oakland Raider safety Tyvon Branch to a one year deal, and also officially inked Jeremy Maclin on Wednesday afternoon. Look for cornerback Ron Parker to sign with another team sometime in the next few days. Also, news on Dwayne Bowe is sure to come soon as well.
