KC Chiefs Fans Anxious For Jeremy Maclin To Officially Sign

Sunday evening was what pretty much every KC Chiefs fan wanted to hear, when news broke that Jeremy Maclin planned to come play for the Chiefs in 2015. A large part of this is so that Maclin can reunite with the head coach who drafted him in 2009 and return to his home state.

Maclin also played his college football for the Missouri Tigers and was teammates with current Chiefs backup quarterback Chase Daniel during that time. Fans are very excited about Maclin coming to Kansas City, but at the same time, it almost seems too good to be true.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

If you remember around this time last year, the Chiefs were very close to inking a deal with wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. In fact, Sanders’ agent accepted a deal with the Chiefs and then continued shopping Sanders to other interested teams, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Sanders’ agent talked to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shortly after and failed to mention that he had agreed on a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Later on, Sanders ended up signing with the Denver Broncos on a three year deal worth $15 million. The two also were supposed to meet with the San Francisco 49ers, but never even visited them to discuss anything.

"“This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations,” one executive involved said. “Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped.”– From Rapoport’s article written in March 2014"

All of that sucked and then to make matters worse, Sanders had a terrific season with the Broncos, which just made it so much more painful. I found myself rooting strongly against Sanders during the regular season (obviously I was rooting against Denver period) because of all of this.

Kansas City was screwed over in this scenario and it sucked watching Emmanuel Sanders have the season he did when he should have been wearing a KC Chiefs uniform.

  • "It is commonly accepted in the league that once two sides agree to a deal — in writing or in handshake form — that’s the end of the story. Instead, Weinberg’s shopping the Chiefs deal and then not informing the Bucs that an agreement had been reached showed another side of the business. A Broncos source said the team had no knowledge of any prior agreements before it agreed to terms with Sanders.– From Rapoport’s article"

Remembering the events of the Sanders catastrophe is why I’m still not jumping for joy over Jeremy Maclin until he actually signs the contract. I think most other Kansas City Chiefs fans feel the same way as well. Even Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star mentioned this matter on Twitter on Tuesday night.

Let’s hope this contract actually gets inked and that Jeremy Maclin is the wide receiver Chiefs fans have been waiting for.
