KC Chiefs: Is The Dwayne Bowe Show Finally Over In Kansas City

facebooktwitterreddit

Dwayne Bowe has been on the hot seat for awhile now with the KC Chiefs, and rumors are swirling that his days in the red and white might be numbered. Conor Orr of NFL.com reported that the Kansas City Chiefs are planning on cutting Bowe if they can’t find a team that’s willing to trade for him.

Dwayne Bowe signed a five year deal worth $56 million during the 2013 off season, and hasn’t done much to show that he’s worthy of that big of a deal. In 2013, Bowe had 673 receiving yards with five touchdowns and this past season had 754 yards and zero touchdowns. It is worth noting though that none of the other wide receivers had touchdowns either.

Orr states that Bowe has little guaranteed money pending from the Chiefs, which wouldn’t affect the cap much.

"Per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Bowe could end up on the free agent market if the Chiefs are unable to trade him, per two sources informed of the team’s plans. The 30-year-old is set to make almost $11 million this year as part of the five-year, $56 million contract he signed back in 2013.However, working against Bowe is the fact that little of that money is guaranteed. The Chiefs could move on with a minimal cap hit if need be."

I personally would be okay with this because Dwayne Bowe hasn’t been the big “elite” receiver he looked like in the 2010 season. That year saw Bowe catching a career high 15 touchdowns with 1,162 receiving yards on the year. All of those touchdowns came from Matt Cassel, and Alex Smith is easily a better quarterback than Cassel is (though I’m sure there are several who disagree with me there).

With the best quarterback he’s had during his tenure in Kansas City, Bowe has only recorded five touchdowns and a little over 1,400 yards. Bowe isn’t worthy of the contract he was given and if he’s not willing to renegotiate, then it’s time for the Chiefs to cut him loose.

The biggest worry here though is if Dwayne Bowe is gone, then who is the number one in Kansas City? You’d have to think that a move like this would result in going after a guy like Jeremy Maclin or maybe even Randall Cobb, but what if the Chiefs can’t land a good free agent? Who is the number one guy?

Dan Hanzus of NFL.com recently reported that the Chicago Bears are willing to trade Brandon Marshall. While Brandon Marshall has had his good moments, he might carry too much drama and I’m not sure if he’d be a good fit for the KC Chiefs. Bowe had his off the field problems during his tenure in Kansas City and I really don’t want to pick up another receiver who is also a diva.

A lot of these questions will be answered in the next few weeks, but I would be surprised if Dwayne Bowe was still a member of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. He’s too expensive and I would much rather the team use the money to pay Justin Houston and re sign Rodney Hudson.

Yes, the possibility of Dwayne Bowe signing with a new team and having a career year is possible, but I stand by with my statement that it’s time to move on from the 2007 first round pick. Things aren’t working out for Bowe in Kansas City and it’s time for him to take his talents (I use that term loosely) elsewhere.

Knowing my luck though, the Chiefs will keep Bowe and then draft Dorial Green-Beckham in the 2015 NFL Draft. Two drama queens on the same team. Hooray!
