KC Chiefs: Would Michael Crabtree Be A Possible Fit
With the NFL off season in full effect, the KC Chiefs are looking to make several upgrades through free agency. One of the main positions that needs attention (and desperately) during the off season is at the wide receiver spot.
With that said, looking around the league at some of the available wide receivers, I think Michael Crabtree would make a lot of sense for the Kansas City Chiefs. For one, he’s a free agent, which is obviously a good sign for a team wanting to sign him.
Second, he’s played with Alex Smith before so there’s already a quarterback/wide receiver relationship there already. The two played together in San Francisco for four seasons until Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2013 off season.

While playing together for the 49ers, Smith and Crabtree connected for 12 touchdowns and the two seemed to be getting into a groove up until Smith’s departure. Bringing in a guy Alex Smith is familiar with would do wonders for his confidence and who knows? Maybe Michael Crabtree could grab the first wide receiver touchdown pass for the Chiefs in over a year.
As of now, the Chiefs’ best wide receiver is Dwayne Bowe, whose future with the team is uncertain at this point. Bowe has a hefty contract that will need to be restructured if he wants to have a chance of staying in Kansas City.
The KC Chiefs recently parted ways with Donnie Avery and A.J. Jenkins, signifying that John Dorsey plans to look elsewhere for a decent receiver, rather than hope one on the roster randomly emerges.
I’ve had my opinions on the other free agent wide receivers on the market, such as Randall Cobb, Jeremy Maclin, or even Lance Moore (click each name to read the respective articles), but the first two options are more than likely not going to happen. Randall Cobb would be way too expensive, Jeremy Maclin will probably stay in Philadelphia, and Lance Moore isn’t the type of receiver that the Chiefs are looking for.
Enter Michael Crabtree.
He’s played for the San Francisco 49ers for six seasons, after being drafted 10th overall by them in 2009. Since then, Crabtree has 347 targets for 4,327 yards and 26 touchdowns. Crabtree’s best season came in 2012 when he had nine total touchdowns and over 1,000 yards receiving. That was the same year in which the 49ers went to the Super Bowl, and Alex Smith was eventually benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick.
Michael Crabtree coming to the Kansas City Chiefs would be a terrific idea because it’d give Alex Smith some comfort when throwing the ball. He threw to the guy for four seasons and I’m sure it wouldn’t take long for them to get reacquainted.
