KC Chiefs: Is Dez Bryant Worth Two First Round Picks

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs will be in the market for several wide receivers, and they will look to acquire them through any means possible. Whether it be free agency, 2015 NFL Draft, a trade, or maybe even signing an unrestricted free agent from another team.

That is where Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant comes in. He is set to become a free agent, but the Cowboys insist that if they can’t reach a deal with him, they will franchise tag him. What is not known is whether the franchise tag will be a restricted or unrestricted.

If the Cowboys decide to use the unrestricted franchise tag on Bryant another team could give up two first round picks to acquire him. Two first round picks for Dez Bryant would be a steal for any team that has a mid to late first round pick this year, and expects to be good enough for a late round pick next year.

Lets take a look at Dez Bryant’s production compared to the Chiefs premiere wide receiver Dwayne Bowe since Bryant entered the league in 2010.

2010

Dez Bryant – 45 receptions, 561 yards, and six touchdowns in 12 games played.

Dwayne Bowe – 72 receptions, 1,162 yards, and 15 touchdowns in 16 games played.

Advantage goes to Bowe during Bryant’s rookie season. 2010 was Bowe’s best season of his career.

2011

Dez Bryant – 63 receptions, 928 yards, and nine touchdowns in 15 games played.

Dwayne Bowe – 81 receptions, 1,159 yards, and five touchdowns in 16 games played.

Advantage goes to Dez Bryant. He played on less game and still nearly doubled Bowe’s touchdown total.

2012

Dez Bryant – 92 receptions, 1,382 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 16 games played.

Dwayne Bowe – 59 receptions, 801 yards, and three touchdowns in 13 games played.

Huge advantage goes to Dez Bryant in 2012.

2013

Dez Bryant – 93 receptions, 1,233 yards, and 13 touchdowns in 16 games played.

Dwayne Bowe – 57 receptions, 673 yards, and five touchdowns in 15 games played.

Dez Bryant nearly doubled Bowe’s production, and only played one more game.

2014

Dez Bryant – 88 receptions, 1,320 yards, and 16 touchdowns in 16 games played.

Dwayne Bowe – 60 receptions, 754 yards, and zero touchdowns in 15 games played.

The evidence is clear that Dez Bryant would be a huge upgrade over Dwayne Bowe, and if the Chiefs can go get that big of a proven upgrade with only two mid to late first round picks then they should be jumping at the opportunity to do so.

When Bryant’s name comes up, it is usually followed by questions about his character. Bryant is a passionate player, and the Dallas and national media likes to paint a picture that Bryant is a problem in the locker room. Meanwhile Bryant has not be in any off the field trouble since he entered the league.

Then you look at Dwayne Bowe who everyone calls a team player and a model teammate. In 2009 Bowe was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Bowe signed a five year $56 million contract to stay with the KC Chiefs prior to the 2013 season. 2014 was Bowe’s second season under his new contract and he rewarded the Chiefs by being suspended for one game following his arrest for possession of a controlled substance.

If the Chiefs can steal Bryant from the Cowboys, they can cut Bowe, and save $10 million in cap space. That would free the Chiefs up to draft a rookie wide receiver to play opposite of Bryant. The other option is to renegotiate Bowe’s current contract to make the cap hit a little more fair, and have him play opposite of Bryant.
