Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against West Virginia Mountaineers

The West Virginia Mountaineers are sitting fourth in the Big 12 Conference right not now at 7-5, and they can still make a big move in the standings. If they can protect their home court against Kansas, and come away with a win, they would move into a tie Oklahoma for third place.

West Virginia plays Kansas again in 15 days, so they have a chance to really stir up the pot in the Big 12 with a couple of big upsets over the conference leaders. Two big wins, with consistent play in between these games, could really help the team’s seeding in the NCAA Tournament next month.

Something the Mountaineers need to overcome is their failure against ranked conference opponents. They are just 1-5 in league play against teams in the Top 25. Their only win against a ranked conference opponent was against Oklahoma.

West Virginia needs a big game from their play maker, Juwan Staten. The Jayhawks may not have anyone who can guard or contain the senior. Staten leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points a game, and assists, with 4.6 per contest, according the his ESPN stat page.

Expect a big game for Devin Williams. The sophomore can offer physical presence against the Kansas front court. Williams averages 11.1 points, and 8.3 rebounds an outing for the Mountaineers.

The Jayhawks are in the driver’s seat again in the Big 12, but the league has not conceded. Kansas has this road game against West Virginia, plus road trips to Oklahoma and Kansas State. They still have Texas at home, as well as this Mountaineer squad, plus a scrappy TCU team that nearly upset Kansas in Fort Worth.

The Jayhawks are not winning easily, and opponents can hope to catch them on an off night. Other than the Texas game, the Kansas team has not look particularly comfortable on the road, against anyone.

A key of late for the Jayhawks has been more consistent play from their most experienced player. Perry Ellis has scored in double figures in eight of his last nine ballgames, averaging 14.7 in that stretch. In the previous seven games before this stretch, Ellis tallied seven points or less four times, and averaged just 9.4 a game.

The Kansas Jayhawks continue to get contributions from a variety of sources. Saturday against Baylor, Landen Lucas stepped up to play 14 minutes, scored nine points, and pulled down four rebounds. He has played 41 minutes over his last four games.

Gary Bedore of KUSports.com reported after the Baylor game that Head Coach Bill Self was happy with Lucas’ play.

"Self said Lucas, “was great. We went with him the second half. He does work hard. To me, Cliff (Alexander, four points, five boards) is ahead of him but there are certain things within a game Landen does better than any big guy we have, because he understands the game better than any big guy we have. In a game like this, he’s so smart, so good against the (BU) zone. Landen has kept a good attitude. He knows his number will be called.”"

Self and the Kansas Jayhawks are going to need good contributions from Lucas, Ellis, and everyone else Monday against West Virginia. It will be interesting to see if Frank Mason III, Wayne Selden Jr, and Devonte’ Graham can contain Juwan Staten, and if these guys can handle the pressure the Mountaineers will apply defensively.

If Kansas can win, they will be that much closer to their 11th straight conference title, and they will have one more tough road game out of the way.
