Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Iowa State Cyclones

The Cyclones bring one of the most potent offense in the nation to Allen Fieldhouse. Iowa State averages 80.4 points a game, the 13th highest number in the country. Not only that, but their 17.8 assists a game is the best in the nation.

Monte Morris is a big reason for both of those stats. Not only does he he score in double digits, but he has 113 assists on the season, and only 22 turnovers.

They also are the 13th best team in college basketball when it comes to shooting. Iowa State hits 49.1% of all their field goal attempts.

The Cyclones feature six players who score nine points or more per contest, and three who average more than five rebound an outing:

  • Georges Niang15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 38.8% from three-point range
  • Bryce Dejean-Jones – 12.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals
  • Naz Long – 11.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 41.3% from three-point range
  • Monte Morris – 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.7 steals
  • Dustin Hogue – 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 44.4% from three-point range
  • Jameel McKay – 9.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks

When Kansas visited Iowa State on January 17th, ISU pretty much dominated the game. The final score, 86-81, really didn’t reflect just how the Cyclones forced their will upon the Jayhawks. Kansas had to scrap just to keep the Cyclones within striking distance.

The Jayhawks are not only the top team in the Big 12 Conference in the standings, but they also lead the league in several categories since conference play started.

  • Scoring Margin – +9.0
  • 3-point FG Percentage – 39.0%
  • FG Percentage Defense – 36.7%
  • Rebounding – 39.5

The defense looks much improved from earlier in the season.. There seems to be more intensity. The previous Iowa State games was an exception. The Jayhawks did not get back in transition as the Cyclones generated several fast break baskets throughout the game.

Kansas will have to do much better in this meeting. They cannot allow the Cyclones to get out and run. The Jayhawks must hustle back on defense every possession. They need to challenge every three-point shot, and fill every passing lane.

Iowa State is a very dangerous squad. Kansas needs this win to split the season series, and maintain their lead in the conference. The Cyclones have now beaten the Jayhawks twice in a row, including the Big 12 Tournament last season. Kansas did not match up well in either game.

If Iowa State beats Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse, their confidence will be very high, and would give them an advantage toward dethroning the Jayhawks in the Big 12. Kansas needs a near perfect game, as they did against Texas, to beat the Cyclones.

The Fieldhouse should be a-rockin’ for this one. The Jayhawks need to be on their A-game from start to finish.
