GAME NOTES VERSUS TEXAS LONGHORNS
Texas will give the Jayhawks all they want on this road this week. The Longhorns are a physical team, and they are fantastic on the glass. Kansas will have their work cut out as Texas is fourth in the nation in rebounding, pulling down 42.8 an outing.
The Longhorns have lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in conference play, but they also walloped 16th ranked West Virginia last week by 27 points. If Kansas starts slowly, as they have in a few games, Texas could very easily blow them off the court.
Myles Turner, the freshman who chose Texas over Kansas last spring is the team leader in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Here are some key performers for the Longhorns. Keep in mind Isaiah Taylor missed ten games with an injury.
- Myles Turner – 11.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.7 blocks
- Jonathan Holmes – 11.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 24 made three-pointers
- Isaiah Taylor – 11.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals
- Javan Felix – 10.5 points, 1.8 assists
- Stats from the ESPN team pages
For the Jayhawks, three freshmen are going to play a big role in this game, and every other on the schedule. Kelly Oubre Jr. has been playing very well of late, scoring in double figures in seven of his last nine games, after not accomplishing that feat at all in his first nine games.
Oubre is also a strong rebounder, pulling down six or more caroms seven times in those last nine games, including ten twice.
Cliff Alexander may also be finding his comfort zone. Against Oklahoma on Monday, he recorded his second double-double of the season, tallying 13 points and 13 rebounds, in just 23 minutes. He also had three assists, and a blocked shot.
Devonte’ Graham returned four games ago, after missing six games with a toe injury. He has recorded 17 assists, and 27 points off the bench in those four contests. His presence offers some much improved depth at the guard positions.
The Kansas Jayhawks lost a 19-point halftime lead, at home, against the Sooners, before scratching their way to a victory. They cannot afford these kinds of mental lapses. They need to stay focus for a full 40 minutes.
The game before, against Iowa State, the Jayhawks failed to get back in transition defense, time and time again. They need to be aware of the situation at all times.
Against Texas, the Kansas Jayhawks need to work hard on the backboards, stay focused, and make some shots like they did early against Oklahoma (eight for their first eight three-pointers). Texas is a very talented team, and they are in play for the Big 12 title, too.
It isn’t ever easy in the Big 12 on the road.
