Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Iowa State Cyclones

This match-up promises to be the Jayhawks’ toughest conference test to date. The Hilton Coliseum crowd is always raucous, and they would love for their Cyclones to knock off the Jayhawks.

The Cyclones are 2-1 in league play, but 2-2 over their past four outings. All four of those games have been extremely close.

Iowa State is the 16th highest scoring team in the country with 79.9 points a game. They have five players averaging in double figures, led by Georges Niang at 14.9 a game. The Cyclones also lead the nation in assists, dishing out 18.5 a game. Monte Morris averages 5.6 assists per contest.

Frank Mason III has emerged as Kansas’ best player. He now leads the team in scoring with 12.4 points a game. Perry Ellis has led the whole season but is mired in not only a scoring slump (averaging just 9.4 points over his last seven games), but is playing with little consistency.

In those last seven outs, Ellis has scored 15 or more points three times, but under seven points four times. He is shooting a terrible 37.9% from the field in thoseseven games. That includes going four for eight from three-point rage.

Ellis doesn’t even appear to be into some games mentally. Against Oklahoma State, he made four turnovers in the first three minutes of the game, and found himself quickly on the bench.

Wayne Selden Jr. has been even more inconsistent offensively. The sophomore guard has scored in double digits just six times, and more than 12 points just twice. He has tallied seven or less points six times. He provides some good hustle plays now and then, but he has not stood out as a good player in very many games.

It is hard to be very critical of the Kansas Jayhawks right now since they are 3-0 in Big 12 play, and 14-2 overall. Still, it doesn’t seem like they are playing very well. They seem to be grinding out their wins right now.

It will be tough to win against the Iowa State Cyclones by merely grinding it out. Kansas will have to be ready at the opening tip. The crowd will be fired up, and the Cyclones would love nothing more than to knock the Kansas Jayhawks from their pedestal.
