Kansas Jayhawks Game Notes Against Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Cowboys are 2-1 thus far in conference play with their only loss coming by two points at Iowa State. They also stubbed their toe with a terrible loss to South Carolina (26 points), and to ranked Maryland in the non-conference portion on their schedule.

Oklahoma State features the the top two scorers in the Big 12 Conference in Phil Forte III and Le’Bryan Nash. As good as these two are, they get plenty of help.

  • Phil Forte – 17.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.6 steals
  • Le’Bryan Nash – 17.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists
  • Anthony Hickey Jr – 9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.0 steals
  • Michael Cobbins – 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2 blocks

The Cowboys average 71.7 points a game, so with Forte and Nash accounting for half the team points, it would behoove Kansas to stop these two.

Forte has averaged 13 points a game against KU in his career, but that included a two-point performance in one game last season. He scored 39 total in the other match-ups last year.

The Jayhawks are undefeated after two conference games but they are not dominating the league statistics by any means.

  • 71.2 points a game – 6th place
  • 63.1 points allowed – 8th
  • +8.1 scoring margin – 8th
  • 43.6% – field goal shooting – 6th
  • 40.8% – field goal shooting defense – 8th
  • 39.5% – three-point shooting
  • 38.7 – rebounds – 6th
  • Stats from Big 12 Conference website

These are all categories we expect Kansas to do well in, yet only in three-point shooting do they excel. The Jayhawks certainly need to improve in all of these areas. It is still early, obviously with only two conference games under the belt, but Kansas is doing better in Big 12 play.

Freshman guard Devonte Graham returned after missing seven games due to an injured toe. He only scored two points but he grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists. He really seemed to strengthen the rotation.

Kansas is suddenly very deep at the guard/small forward position. The guards all offer different skill sets, and Head Coach Bill Self will really be able to play the hot hands in any given game, and will have options for certain match-ups.

Putting Graham and starting point guard Frank Mason III in games together might also present some issues for opponents. They can both handle the ball well, and can really push it up the floor, and can create opportunities on the offensive end.

Oklahoma State has beaten Baylor and Texas. The Kansas Jayhawks cannot fall asleep on the Cowboys. Just about every game is going to be a scrap, and this one should be no different.
