Game Notes Versus The Utah Utes

Maybe the only thing you need to know about how good the Utah Utes are is that last week, they were the first school to beat the Wichita State Shockers in the regular season since March 2, 2013. The Utes outlasted the Shockers to win by one in overtime.

Utah’s only loss came against the 16th ranked San Diego State Aztecs.

Utah has four players averaging in double digits – Delon Wright (15.4), Jordan Loveridge (11.5), Jakob Poeltl (11.3), and Brandon Taylor (10.3). Poeltl pulls down 9.3 rebounds, and Wright dishes out 4.9 assists an outing.

Perry Ellis (14.4) and Frank Mason III (10.6) are the only Jayhawks to average more than ten points. Ellis also leads Kansas with 7.1 rebounds, and Mason is tops on the team in assists with 3.4.

Brannen Greene was the hero off the bench against Georgetown, scoring 19 points. Greene went red hot from the the three-point line, nailing all five of his attempts from behind the arc.

Injuries could come into play in this one. Both point guards are nursing ankle injuries. Mason got banged in the Florida game, and DeVonte Graham sprained his ankle against the Hoyas on Wednesday midway through the second half.

Mason didn’t look as if his ankle was bothering him three days ago, and DeVonte Graham should be good to go, according to Gary Bedore of KuSports.com.

"“He turned his ankle. They re-taped it (in locker room). He’ll be sore, but he’ll be fine,” KU coach Bill Self said, noting it wasn’t serious."

If either Mason and Graham re-injure themselves, Wayne Selden, Jr. played some point guard in some of the early season games.

Jamari Traylor, who was suspended for the Georgetown game due to his arrest last week, should be available against the Utes.

This should be an entertaining match-up for the Kansas Jayhawks. We are starting to see an identity emerge as Kansas has several perimeter players who can be effective attacking the rim.

Although they don’t seem to finish very often, they are getting fouled a lot. The Jayhawks are averaging over 29 free throws a game, hitting 73% (stats from ESPN’s team pages).

The Kansas Jayhawks will take the next week off for finals, so they need to head into the break with a big win.
