The Kansas Jayhawks basketball team will welcome the Rider Broncs on Monday as they try to bounce back from the fourth worst defeat in school history. Kansas (1-1) was trounced by 32 points last week by the Kentucky Wildcats, an embarrassing performance in just about every aspect of the game.

The Jayhawks didn’t play particularly well in their victory against UC Santa Barbara, but things deteriorated much more severely against Kentucky. Kansas made just 11 field goals against the Wildcats, in 56 attempts, for a paltry 19.6%.
In their first two games, Kansas is just five for 25 behind the arc, and have committed 27 turnovers. They have just six more made field goals than turnovers. The Jayhawks only scored 40 points against Kentucky, and are averaging just 54.5 points a game.
The Jayhawks do not have a player averaging double digits thus far. The two guys who should be leading this team have been ineffective on offense early on this season. Wayne Selden, Jr has 19 points in two games, and Perry Ellis has tallied just 17. These are the players that are supposed to be the stars, the leaders, and these numbers are not acceptable.
If Ellis and Selden cannot get it on track quickly, this may turn out to be a very long season for Kansas. The one loss, as bad as it was, is just one game, and not the end of the world, but the Jayhawks need to recover and play much better Monday against Rider.
Ellis and Selden need to start asserting themselves, and hopefully, they can get some help from their teammates. Head Coach Bill Self looks to have his work cut out for himself if this team is going to improve enough to win their 11th straight Big 12 Conference regular season title.
