Sporting Kansas City announced Monday that they have released Midfielder Alex Martinez and have recalled Mikey Lopez from his loan assignment with OKC Energy FC. Martinez was drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by Sporting KC.

More from Sporting Kansas City

In his rookie season the young midfielder started 3 games for Sporting KC and was able to tally his first professional goal against Minnesota United FC in the U.S. Open Cup competition.

Martinez was one of the youngsters on Sporting KC’s roster that stepped up amidst an injury plagued season and has served well in his time with the team.

Lopez was selected in the first round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by Sporting KC and has spent a majority of his time on loan with either Orlando City or more recently OKC Energy FC. Lopez was able to score his first goal for OKC in their 2-0 win over Sacramento Republic Saturday.

Something tells me there is more to this story than what is currently being reported. According to Greg Lalas of MLSsoccer.com, when asked about potential signings in the upcoming transfer window Sporting Kansas City Coach Peter Vermes said:

"“Like I said, we’re banged up. We have three players, two of which are season-ending injuries, probably even a little into next year. We have another guy that has a career-ending injury and then we have another eight guys that are out with injury, now nine. Then we have a few guys out on loan that we have to bring back. We definitely are looking for some players based on the injuries that we have and the ones that are the long-term ones. There’s a couple different areas of the field. Midfield is definitely a place.”"

The team has also been open about being interested in USMNT Midfielder Jermaine Jones. Here is what Vermes had to say about the possibility of signing Jones:

"“I know the league is talking to him and we’re kind of in the mix like any other team, but right now it’s not 100 percent. It’s somebody we would keep on our radar, but it’s not a decision that we’ve said, ‘Hey. This is the guy we want.’”"

A signing is very likely to happen very soon for Sporting KC so keep your eyes peeled to KC Kingdom and we will be on top of any signings as soon as they happen.

Sporting KC return home to host the Chicago Fire on Sunday. If you are interested in Jermaine Jones, USA face Belgium in a round of 16 match-up against Belgium Tuesday at 3pm CDT.
